Preseason Game One: Part III.

By TOM

1st and 10, Van Noy did not have a great game. But he is a veteran leader, and the Pats are going to need him this year. He can play all over the field, and his main role last season was to protect the flat on the QB's right. When the offense went there, to shut it down. Make the QB play left handed. He is also very adept at covering the RB out of the backfield, which is always an under appreciated talent.

"Kyle’s done a really good job for us. He’s a player that didn’t start his career here but has come in and really has understood the way that we have tried to do things. He’s embraced it. He’s become very much of a leader in, A, doing his job and doing it the right way, but also helping other guys, particularly guys that transition onto the team as he did. He has a good perspective for that," BB said on WEEI. "But, he’s been very durable, dependable, he’s a smart football player, he’s versatile. He can do a lot of different things defensively, in the running game, in the passing game and in the kicking game. So, he’s got a good skillset and is a smart player with experience and can fill a lot of different roles for us. It’s hard to find players like that. He’s been a valuable guy for us."

1st and 10, the Defense came back out in a 3-3 Nickel. The Skins ran a sweep that Malcolm Brown almost blew up at the start. But the RB snuck around him. Van Noy bolted outside, and stayed in front of the RB. Then he encountered the OLG pulling outside to lead the RB. Van Noy went low and knocked the OG back off his feet and right into the RB, to tackle him with the OG's butt. I don't know why, but I love it when defenders, like Rivers (and Shelton;), tackle the RB carrier by jamming the blocker into them.

2nd and 10, Danny Shelton is a freak. He is the defense's version of Trent Brown. They are just too big to be able move that well. He can get out in front of the RB (who weighs a 100-pounds less than him;) on the sweep, and beat him to the sideline. Like Brown, he is also freakishly strong. When he stays and plays low, he can be the strongest defender on the team.

Pats lined up in 2-5, with Chung in as the Sam. Shelton was on the strongside of the OC, with Brown on the Weak. Sheldon's initial burst was something to see. He jammed the ORG back two yards, and the ORT had to burst over and help him. Brown burst across the OC's face and they blew up the blocking scheme. The RB had to jump to the left, and then back to the middle were he was suppose to run. Plus, Clayborn set the edge outside, and Van Noy got in front of him outside of Clayborn. So he tried to cut back to the Strongside.

But Shelton had shed the two OLs, and was already turning to him as he almost reached the LOS. The ORG Held him from the side, as he swiped at the RB cutting back behind him. Then he finally punched off the OG, and jumped on the RB like a hungry bear. That is simply incredible agility, COD, and balance for such a big dancing bear.

3rd and 4, the Pats crowded the line with seven guys. They were getting aggressive here. The blocking was good. The QB hit the WR on a crossing pattern, and he ran at an angle upfield all the way across the field until he ran out of bounds. No defender stood out on that play.

1st and 10, Malcolm Brown has been on the bubble this Preseason. But he is still a cheap Cap guy who can do a lot of things. He was dominating the OLs on the past two plays. I don't know if he was injured last season, or played harder (or should I say more focused;) this week, but he looked quicker and more explosive than last season, in this game.

"I think Malcolm's improved pretty much every week," BB said. "I know he’s definitely helping us making some significant plays out there. And again, eating up a lot of plays in front of him. So that other guys, like Elandon (Roberts), Kyle (Van Noy), Dont’a, and those guys can fit in and make the tackles."

The Pats lined up in a 4-3 with six guys on the line. Van Noy got into the backfield quick. Shelton and Brown held there ground inside. They both got a hit on the RB. Brown held onto his ankle. Chung helped bring him down.

2nd and 6, Wise looked like he has a chance to step into that starters role, and produce some stats. He has great long arms, and the size of a 5-Tech. But he can also play the edge with some power. speed, and smarts. The team is really looking for him to step up this season, and be a legit compliment to Flowers. If he can step up, and Clayborn can continue to play to his level, that is a heck of a 3-man rush the Pats can put up (with some speed outside from Flowers;).

"Deatrich has been awesome, man," Shelton said. "Watching film of him from last year, he’s an awesome pass rusher. And he’s powerful in the run as well. I’m excited to work with him."

Wise blasted off into the backfield. He exploded so fast off the snap that the OLG missed him. He used his speed to power so well that he shoved the OLT clean off his feet, as the OLG tried to grab him but couldn't. Then he crashed into the RB (on the play action, unfortunately;), and knocked him out of the play. Then he went after the QB. That is four offensive players he affected on that play.

Unfortunately, the QB rolled out to his right, away from Wise, and had a little time. Rivers got pressure on him as he had to run in front of him (away from Wise;), and forced an early throw that he didn't want to make. The QB had to throw it essentially into the dirt at his WR's feet, as Rowe had great coverage. The Pats really have been playing the most basic of Zones and Man in this Preseason game. The Play action roll out got the QB away from Wise, but it shutdown half the field as well.

3rd and 11 (after a penalty), Hightower is looking old. He had a lot of knee injures, but it was good to see him back. This defense really needs his leadership and ability to play anywhere. "Having him back with us is huge," Marquis Flowers said. "He's our leader on defense." BB kept him in for most of the game. Which was odd. But he seemed to move better as the game went on.

"He’s everything you want as a player, as a teammate, and just as a person. He’s a natural-born leader. He has an amazing IQ. That doesn’t get talked about enough," Van Noy said. "He knows the adjustments. He puts everyone in the right positions. That’s my guy. He’s like my brother now. I’m glad to have him on my team."

The Pats crowded the line with five guys in a Dime. Hightower was lined up on the strongside. He got a good blast off, and got in low on the ORT. He put him on skates, and drove him back into the QB. But Clayborn got a good rush as well, and scared the QB out of the pocket before Hightower could get him. He saw Hightower as he turned to run to his right, and threw the ball quickly to the RB. Van Noy lost his coverage, and the RB scored easily.
