7-Things For Chargers, Playoffs: Part II.

By TOM

1. Chargers Vs. Ravens: 1st Quarter: Part 2- The Ravens come out with the weird new trend, having two guys in the Backfield with the QB in the Shotgun. A Strong formation again, with the QB in the shotgun, the RB behind him, and the FB/TE on the right. The Chargers stayed in their nine-man front. Flacco fumbled the snap, which shot past him like a rocket. Melvin Ingram dived on it, but is skidded off his hands and a pile ensued.

2nd and 25, the Ravens lined up in a 4-Wide I-Shotgun. Chargers went into a basic 3-4. They fumble the ball again, and the Chargers recovered. This might be the worst offense ever.

The Chargers motioned into a normal Strong formation, which is a run formation. They make a show with more motion, and Rivers made some fake signals. Then they run a Dive to Gordon. He dug under the line for about four. A penalty made it 1st and goal from the Six. They go back to the Strong formation, with twin WRs on the right. They run a Dive again. The RB snuck through the line for a few.

2nd and Goal from the 3, they goof their way into a Bunch Left Weak Shotgun. Then ran a Draw. The RB tripped on his OLís foot, and fell down after a couple, and hurt leg his leg.

3rd and Goal from the 1 and half, They go into a tight Singleback with TE-motion. The Raven donít even pretend that they will pass. They have all eleven guys on the line in run defense. The RB doesnít reach the LOS to force the FG. Chargers-3.

The Ravens lined up in a 3-Wide Weak Shotgun and motioned the FB/TE just before the snap. The Chargers matched up in a 3-4. The Ravens ran a Dive, and half the defense was in on the mess.

2nd and 6, Ravens lined up in a 4-Wide Weak Shotgun. The Chargers matched up in a 3-3 Nickel. They tried to run. Ingram shot into the backfield and got to the RB behind the line. He fell forward for a yard.

3rd and 5, Ravens in a bunched up Strong shotgun. The Chargers matched up in a 2-4 Nickel, with four guys on the line. They sent all four. Bosa ran past Jackson, and flushed him out of the pocket. But because Bosa ran to the other side of the field and lost contain, Jackson ran for an easy First down.

1st and 10, Raven lined up in a 4-Wide I-Shotgun, The Chargers stayed in their 3-4. They donít think the Ravens rookie QB can pass on them at all. They ran play action. The rookie QB threw quickly into triple coverage. This is the struggle. Iím not sure how much this Tape helps. When the Pats go into a 4-Wide Shotgun? Itís not going to look like a rookie QB throwing into coverage.

The Ravens morphed into a Singleback-shotgun, with a TE on the end of both sides of the line. Chargers matched up in a 3-4, with two OLB on the left, in front of the TE. The Ravens ran and the NT Darius Philon burst into the backfield for a TFL.

3rd and 11, Ravens went 3-Wide Weak Shotgun, with a bunch on the right. Charger went into a four-man line, three down one up, and seven DBs. That is a defense they will be using against the Pats. They sent four, and Bosa got the Sack. He was lined up inside in front of the OLG, and beat him inside to force the punt.

The Chargers lined up in a 3-Wide Strong shotgun, with the TE on the weakside. Rivers signaled something, but nothing changed. Ravens showed blitz with two guys charging up to the line before the snap. Rivers dumped it off to the RB before he was done with his drop. Ekeler was hit behind the line, but was able to get a couple.

2nd and 8, Chargers lined up in a Bunch-Left Singleback. They sent Benjamin across the formation in a fake jet sweep, and ran a Dive. 3rd and 4, 4-Wide Weak shotgun. Rivers dumped it off into the flat for very little. 4th and 3, Field goal.
Chargers-6. Ravens-Zip.

1st and 10, the Ravens motioned into 3-Wide I-Shotgun. Chargers showed Zone and stayed in their 3-4. Ravens ran a Dive right into the teeth of the defense. Five guys got in on the tackle.

2nd and 6, the Ravens motioned into a 3-Wide Strong-Shotgun. Chargers just stayed in their 3-4, and brought the safety up like a Will again. The Ravens are scared to have their rookie QB throw, so they run the Dive again. The Safety Phillips tripped up the RB.

The Ravens went 4-Wide I-Shotgun. They Ravens spread out in a Cover One 3-4. Ravens ran a Dive AGAIN to force the punt. The Pats are not going to do that. This rookie offense is a waste of time.

Chargers lined up in a 3-Wide strong Shotgun. Phillips pointed out the Mike. Gordon is next to him. They ran the fake jets sweep, and run a sweep to the other side. Gordon got hit in the backfield, as everyone and his brother saw the run coming. The OLB destroyed the TE Green on the Edge.

2nd and 12, Chargers went Empty. They set the little slot WR across to Rivers right. He looked left, and dumped it off to the WR. He has a new habit of dumping the ball off to his right quicker than a mouse to cheese. Ekeler made one guy miss, and got tackled well short.

3rd and 6, the Chargers motioned into a Double stacked Weak-Shotgun. They really love the motion. Rivers threw. He got rushed a little, and threw a beautiful pass down the left sideline. It was well covered, and the placement was perfect on the back shoulder of the streaking Allen. That was his best throw of the game.

1st and 10, Bunched up Singleback. They run a Dive to Gordon for very little. They love to run Dives. The Pats interior DL is going to have to stop that play to win this Game. Because those power Dives wear down a defense for the 2nd Half.

2nd and 9, Chargers lined up in a Bunch-Right Singleback. Chargers key run, and bring two defenders up into the box. Rivers ran play action, and had to take off. He didnít slide down and got hammered by two big guys. But that counts as a pass. Though it was Rivers longest run of the season, 7-yards.

3rd and 2. Chargers lined up in a 3-Wide Weak shotgun, as Gordon motioned back into the backfield. Rivers tried to throw, but had to move his feet to the right because of pressure up the middle. It was his worst pass of the day. It didnít reach his WRís feet to force the punt. Patriots need to get him to move his feet.

1st Quarter:
Tight Single back- Pass 1 for 1
4-W Weak shotgun, W/ Hand Signal- Run 1 for 1
3-W W Shotgun, Weird WR Motion- Pass 2 for 2 Strong Formation- Run 2 for 2
Bunch Left Weak Shotgun- Pass 1 for 1
tight Singleback TE-motion- Run 1 for 1
3-Wide Weak Shotgun- Pass 1 for 1
Bunch-R Singleback- Run 1 for 1
4-W Weak shotgun- Pass 1 for 1
3-Wide strong Shotgun- Run 1 for 1
Double-Stacked Shotgun- Pass 1 for 1
Bunched-Left Singleback- Run 1 for 1
Bunch-Right Singleback- Pass 1 for 1

1. Chargers Vs. Ravens: 2nd Quarter- 1st and 10, Ravens lined up in a 4-Wide I-Shotgun. Chargers stayed in the 3-4. They sent four, and the OLB on the Strongside, stayed at the line unblocked, eyeing down the RB. When he saw the play action, then he dropped. Jackson threw the ball about 5-yards downfield over everyoneís head. The Chargers Corner was the only one who had a shot at it.

2nd and 10, The Ravens lined up in a four man front, one up three down, and had the Safeties in as the ILBs again. They sent four. Jackson took off and ran for the First.

1st and 10, Ravens lined up in 3-Wide I-shotgun. Chargers stayed in their odd 3-4, with a five man front and three Safeties as the Will, Mike, and Sam. Very odd. All three Safeties meet at the RB on the off tackle run four yards down field.

2nd and 6, Chargers also donít like to shift their DBs to WR-motion, but seem to be playing Man as well. Ravens motion into a Bunch-Left 4-Wide Weak Shotgun. And again the DBs didnít really shift to motion. But they were in Man outside. Jackson threw into a double team. Casey Hayward tipped the ball, and Phillips intercepted it. The other thing about this scheme is that they end up with six DBs on the field almost every down.

Chargers lined up in a 3-Wide Strong Shotgun, 1 for 1 run. Rivers dropped and looked down field until Gordon got out in the flat, and then dumped it off to him. He made a nice spin move, to skip off the Safety, and picked up four.

2nd and 7, Chargers lined up in a Bunch-Left Singleback (1 for 1 run on Bunch-R Singleback). They jet Benjamin in motion, and toss the ball to Gordon behind what was left of the Bunch. Gordon looked trapped, but he is a phenomenal RB. He beats the LB outside, and hurdled over the Safety for a First. The ref spotted him short.

3rd and 1, they hustled up to the line in the same formation and snapped it as soon as the ref is out of the way. If this ainít a run Iíll eat my shorts. They ran a power Dive, and the whole bunch slammed inside. Gordon fell forward for a First, but a flag popped out of the pile as well. The Ravens foolishly tried to substitute, and got caught with 12-Men on the field.

1st and 10, Chargers shifted into a Bunch-Right Weak shotgun. They passed out of the same formation, with the bunch on the left. They ran a little play action, and the rush got to Rivers in a flash.

2nd and 1, they went right into 4-Wide Weak shotgun, with a bunch on the Left. They like to pass on of a bunched-up shotgun. The RB stayed in to block. Rivers hit Keenan Allen on the seam for about ten.

3rd and 4, they motioned into a 4-Wide Weak shotgun, 1 for 1 pass. Rivers hit Gates on the Seam again, on an In. His arms has lost some zip. He likes to throw outside on short throws, and between the seams on the second level. He only went deep down the sideline once.

They lined up in a Tight Singleback, with two TEs on the Left and two WRs on the right. They ran out of a tight Singleback (with motion) last time. They ran a Dive. They mostly run Dives.

2nd and 9, Chargers lined up in another Tight Singleback, and used motion this time. They finally give it to the Jet-Sweep-guy, after faking it a bunch of times. Only it is the RB Ekeler, and not the WR Benjamin. He ran for very little.

3rd and 7, Bunch-L Strong shotgun. They passed out of this with the Bunch on the right every time. Ravens jumped off sides. 3rd and 2, Chargers motioned into a 4-Wide Weak-Shotgun, 2 for 2 pass. Rivers dropped, but got hit. He doesnít go down, and bailed to his right. He tried to throw into the Endzone. It didnít work. They have to kick the field goal. Charges-9.

Ravens motioned into a 4-Wide I-Shotgun. Chargers stayed in their base defense with a five man front (two up, three down), and two safeties in at ILB. They ran a Draw, and James (at OLB) and Ingram made the tackle.

2nd and 8, Ravens go 4-Wide I-Shotgun, and motioned the TE around again. The RB ran behind his motion on a Dive again. The whole front eight got in on the tackle.

3rd and 3, the Ravens ran it down to the two-minute warning for some reason. Then came back in a 4-Wide Strong Shotgun. The Chargers matched up in their funky 3-4. They got some nice pressure from three or four guys. Jackson over threw the WR on the sideline to force the punt.

Chargers lined up in a 4-Wide Weak Shotgun- 3 for 3 pass. Rivers screamed Gator, which was a check to the Draw. Ekeler ran for four. 2nd and 6, 4-Wide Weak shotgun. Rivers dropped and threw a quick out as fast as his little feet could move him backwards.

3rd and 1, Empty. They motioned Ekeler into a 4-Wide Weak shotgun with a bunch on the Right. He turned to the RB, who was covered. Then zipped it to Gates on the 40, for a First.

1st and 10, the Chargers lined up in a 4-Wide Weak shotgun- 3 for 4 pass. Rivers got hit as he threw, and it turned into a high lob pass to Keenan Allen. He dropped it. Rivers got tackled to the ground from behind. Letís see if he can complete the next pass.

2nd and 10, 4-Wide Weak shotgun. He had time, and was able to step into the throw. And zipped it about 12-yards outside to the sideline. Mike Williams caught it, and got out of bounds. It got them to within 6-yards of field goal range.

Bunch-Right Weak Shotgun- 3 for 3 Pass. Rivers checked into a Bunch Right Strong shotgun, which is the same formation for them. The OC snapped his head down, with extra exaggeration, like he was hiking the ball, and all four passrushers jumped off sides.

1st and 5, the Chargers lined up in a Bunch Right Weak shotgun. Rivers got pressure, and jump passed it over the rusher to Ekeler sneaking out of the backfield. He got them in field goal range.

2nd and 2, Chargers lined up in a 4-Wide Weak shotgun. Rivers dumped it to Ekeler again. He tripped over the magic yellow line. 1st and 10, Chargers motioned into a 4-Wide Strong shotgun, Ekeler stayed in to block. Rivers threw a back shoulder that didnít have the steam to reach the WR outside.

2nd and 10, 4-Wide Weak shotgun, they ran a Draw, and then call a Timeout. 3rd and 7 with only 15-seconds left. Chargers lined up Empty. The Chargers O-line didnít block anyone, and got outside for a screen. 1st and 10, with 8-seconds, and they are running a play. They Check into a 3-Wide Weak shotgun. They ran a draw to set up the field goal.

The most interesting aspect of this drive was that Rivers ran off the field after he called timeout, and ran inside to the locker room early to ďget out of the coldĒ. If he thought he was cold last week, wait until it is in the teens in the 2nd half in Foxboro. Chargers-12. Ravens- El Zippo.

Bunch-L Singleback- Run 1 for 1
