Here is Part One of my

2017 Boston Celtics 4.0

1st Round Mock Draft.

SV=Standing Vert, MV=Max Vert + SR-Standing Reach = MVR Max Vert Reach.

Well Trader Danny did not take his time blowing up the Draft. The question is why the timing. Most Lottery trades are made after the clock. So they can trade the 1st Round picks next year. I have never seen Lottery picks swapped a week before the Draft, ever. So why the rush. Danny did a good job keeping his red cape off, but he couldn't wait to find a phone booth and turn into Trader Danny. Ainge might be predictable, but Trader Danny is more Captain Underpants than Superman.

The only reason to explain the timing is that Trader Danny wants to make another trade. "There’s always the possibility," Ainge said. "The phone has been ringing since news of this deal came out. But we’re happy with this pick." They have enough time now to work out a deal on or off the clock now.

Do they want Jimmy Butler, or the two Kings picks? "Even before the lottery, we have been evaluating these kids for the last few years, and we felt that they were all close," Ainge said. "The player we would take at Number Three was close to the player at Number One. We’ll still be able to get the player we want in the draft." After rumors of the Celts affinity for Jackson?

It certainly appears he is their man. "We think there’s a really good chance the player we take at 3 is the player we would have taken at 1," Ainge said. "When the right deals come around, we will move on them. And if they’re not good deals then we will be more patient." I have been saying for months that Jackson reminds me of Jimmy Butler.
Who Trader Danny has been trying to acquire for a while. "They can be valuable in trades," Captain Underpants said about the Nets picks. "And they can be valuable by using the picks to draft good young players. So we’ll continue on that path until a brighter, quicker future that we like approaches." Now he has pick Three in this draft, which will have Ball or Jackson available, and two other Lottery picks again.

The question is will captain Underpants strike again. "This is certainly a trade that is under the microscope more than other trades,"  Captain Underpants said. "But we're not afraid of that." This was a very risky trade for all sorts of reasons.
I keep hearing Tutam's name with the Celts. "It’s very good value for us, and obviously (Philadelphia) wanted that No. 1 pick," Ainge said. "[Fultz] is someone they really wanted, who fits in with what they’re trying to do." Which worries me. I am not a Tatum guy.
Plus, players from Duke tend to not translate to the NBA as well as expected. "Obviously there are bigger risks when you make a trade like this under a microscope," Captain Underpants said. "But we’re not afraid of that. If there was a 50-50 split in our group over who we liked, there would be more concern. But we are very excited about this deal. We get the player we want. [Philly] got the player they want." But, Tatum has shown more off court character than Jackson, and Celtics toadies having been putting him up higher than anyone else.

-------

Yeah, no. No-No-No-No-No-No-No. Uh Danny? No. Don't tell  me that Fultz isn't a generational player. He did things at 18 that hadn't been done in a generation. He led Division One college basketball in scoring average at 18. That has been done in a generation. He had the highest scoring average in the PAC-12 since 1997. That has been done in a generation.

For crying out loud, I take one day off for Father's Day. I play a little basketball, watch my son's Little League Playoff Game, and then we all go out for dinner, and go basketball sneaker shopping on a perfect day. And then all Hell breaks loss. I wake up this morning to Danny trading the best player in the Draft Markelle Fultz. NO-NO-NO.

I will say this abut Fultz. He reminds me of Rose. One thing about Fultz is that he hurt his knee last season, and that was Rose's one and maybe only problem in the NBA. Can Fultz stay healthy in the NBA. That was my only worry with Fultz, and that cannot be predicted or really considered.

Markelle Fultz

1. Sixers- Markelle Fultz- Washington, 19 years old, 6-4, 185, 6-9 WS, 8-6 SR.

41.3% 3-P! 23.2 PPG, 6.7 APG, 5.7 APG, 50.2% 2-P, 1.6 Steals, 1.2 Blocks.

The Team: You have to give Philly credit. They found the talent they wanted, and they went and got him. "I think that should we move or should a transaction come up that gives us the chance to perhaps increase what impact No. 3 could have in terms of its return, I think we will look at it," Colangelo said. "There’s some discussions that have been fairly interesting. And its not that were motivated to move it. It’s just that time of year where you find out what you have and you explore all options." He made a bold move up.
Fultz is the player who is clearly ahead of all the rest in this Draft. "I think if you look at him, you look at the tools that he brings," the VP of PP Marc Eversley said. "He's very versatile, he's got a great handle, he's got terrific vision. He's a great passer. I think he can shoot with range. And I think he's a very good defender." He is an underrated defender.
They didn't really want another Wing. "We have a choice of multiple wings that would address things with our team that we have said that we would like to address," Colangelo said. "There are some guards that you have to look at that would dramatically improve our guard play." And he got the best guard in the Draft.
Fultz is a franchise changing player. "I think that should we move or if there's a transaction that comes out that gives us a chance to perhaps increase what impact No. 3 can have in terms of its return, I think we will look at it," Colangelo said about the trade he is now consummating with the Celtics. "There's some discussions that have been fairly interesting." It was interesting enough to pull the trigger.
They have have two of the best passers who can also score (and Fultz is a great shooter), from the last two Drafts. "I think good basketball players and good decision makers and guys that get out and run and can finish in transition and shooting obviously would all be things that complement Ben Simmons," Colangelo said. "Defensively we probably want to put guys around him that can guard the point guard in certain cases. In some cases Ben will be able to guard the point guard and in some cases you’ll want him guarding off the ball." You win with stars in the NBA.

The Sixers got the steal of the Draft. "They have a young team, and I think the upside of it would be crazy," Fultz said about Philly. "I'm close to home. So a lot of my family can come out and just show love. And this city has great fans." Trading up to #1, with either an extra 1st in 2018 or an extra 1st in 2019 for Markelle Fultz.

Futz is the prize in this years Draft, like Simmons was last year. "I really don't pay a lot of attention to it," Fultz said about the rumors of him being traded to Philly. "I'm blessed. I pray every night before I go to sleep. I let God take care of that. I wake up every morning and get ready to go to the gym. I don't really pay attention to everything that's going on." He has top character.

He actually wants to play for the Sixers. "Oh, man, I can see it happening," Fultz said about coming to Philly before the trade. "I come to Philly a lot, and just showing the love for the city. I'm out here. I just want to show love. That's all it was. I got to get a cheesesteak. I'm big on that." He's a local kid.
Simmons, Embiid (if healthy), and Saric will give them a hell of a top four. "Embiid and me have been talking before," Fultz said. "He’s a cool guy, pretty funny. So when I saw that it was like, cool. I’m happy the players want me to come here." You win with stars in the NBA, and Philly now has three or four stars to give the Celtics some trouble for a long while.

The Sixers want to move Simmons to PG. "We need Ben at point guard," HC Brett Brown. "Let Joel be Joel and we need shooters around them." If they want Simmons to play the point than they have to succeed with the musical chairs that will follow defensively. Simmons can cover Power Forwards and Small Forward. But I just don't see him covering other positions.

So they have a need for defensive players first and foremost to make that plan work. "I do concede the thing that we missed with him not playing after the all-star break is I have this vision that I want to pursue with him as a point guard," Brown said. "Nobody can promise that I'm right. I don't know, either. But I think from what I have studied from his childhood, high school and at LSU, I feel confident that we should try this and look at it. We would know a lot more if he had played." They need a Wing who can cover SGs and Small Forwards, and maybe PGs and PFs as well.
That is starting to sound more and more like Malik Monk. "It is of that species, that is for sure," Brown said. "It's somebody that can guard the other point guard. It's somebody that can make a Three, and can bring the ball up the floor from time to time. It's a combo guy." They need a pure SG (Monk), who can cover PGs defensively.

And with the Third pick in the Draft they also need him to be a star, or an offensive force. "To Bryan Colangelo's credit, he does fit the qualities we're going to need in that position next to Ben Simmons," Brown said. "If you go Ben Simmons at a 1, that type of player at a 2, Covington at a 3, Saric at a 4 and Embiid at a 5? Can that team play defense? You bet. Can they score? You bet. Can they run? Yes they can." Only Monk is not a PG in any way shape or form. He is a pure shooter who can play a little defense, and little else.

One thing we know for sure is that Johnson can play the wing defender role. It is much easier to find a Shooting Guard in a Point Guard body in the NBA. Then Covington can cover Twos, and Simmons and Johnson can cover the Threes and Fours. Or, Saric can cover the Threes or Fours and Jackson can cover the Twos. But if they honestly want Simmons to play the Point, and I wholeheartedly agree that he can, than they have to think about an ultra-versatile defender first, and that is Jackson.
The Player: Markelle Fultz: Baby Faced Assassin

The Reason: The Sixers agreed with the consensus (last week;) that Fultz is the top talent in this Draft by a step or two. "You have to give Philly credit," Ainge said. "They found the talent they wanted, and they went and got him." In the NBA if you think a player is a Franchise Changer than you have to do every thing you can to get him.

And let's be honest, the price wasn't that steep at all! "I think that should we move or should a transaction come up that gives us the chance to perhaps increase what impact No. 3 could have in terms of its return, I think we will look at it," Colangelo said. "There’s some discussions that have been fairly interesting. And its not that were motivated to move it. It’s just that time of year where you find out what you have and you explore all options." He made the bold move up.
Fultz is the player who Philly feels is clearly ahead of all the rest in this Draft (though Jackson has been the late riser everyone is talking about;). "I think if you look at him, you look at the tools that he brings," the VP of PP Marc Eversley said. "He's very versatile. He's got a great handle. He's got terrific vision. He's a great passer. I think he can shoot with range. And I think he's a very good defender." He is an underrated defender.
They didn't really want another Wing. "We have a choice of multiple wings that would address things with our team that we have said that we would like to address," Colangelo said. "There are some guards that you have to look at that would dramatically improve our guard play." And he got the best guard in the Draft (Beside Ball, maybe;).
Fultz is a franchise changing player. "I think that should we move or if there's a transaction that comes out that gives us a chance to perhaps increase what impact No. 3 can have in terms of its return, I think we will look at it," Colangelo said about the trade he has now consummated with the Celtics. "There's some discussions that have been fairly interesting." It was interesting enough to pull the trigger.

"Defensively we probably want to put guys around him that can guard the point guard in certain cases. In some cases Ben will be able to guard the point guard and in some cases you’ll want him guarding off the ball." You win with stars in the NBA.

If Simmons, Embiid, Saric, and Fultz are all healthy they could have the best passing young team in the NBA. "I am incredibly excited that we've acquired the No. 1 overall pick in Thursday's NBA draft," 76ers owner Josh Harris said. "This pick provides us a tremendous opportunity to add another foundational player to our promising core." In three or four years, they could bust out do to injury, or be fighting the Celtics for Eastern Conference supremacy.

Second Choice: Trade the pick back to the Celtics.

Lonzo Ball

2. LA- Josh Jackson- Wing, 6-8, 203, Kansas, FR, WS 6-9 3/4, 8-3 SR,

16.3 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 3 APG, 54.9% 2-P, 37.8 3-P, 1.7 Steals, 1.1 Blocks,

The Team: Jackson has been the late riser in this Draft. He is the kind of player that wins in the NBA now. Wings who can pass and run an offense are worth their weight Lottery Balls. Plus, he has the versatile to cover 2 through 4s in small ball, and rebound over Power Forwards like Draymond Green. He is also the most explosive athlete off the floor in the Draft, and that always translates.

The Celtics where going to take him with the first pick in the Draft. "The feedback we're getting with Josh is there's a lot of talk out there about the Celtics right now maybe shopping their pick or potentially throwing Josh's name out there," Kansas HC Self said. "I think he's got a good chance to go Two for sure [to the Lakers]. If he does fall, I think Philadelphia (/Boston;) has a great chance to pick him up at [Three]. I shouldn't say for sure, he's going to be a top-five pick with I think an outside chance of being No. 1, but a realistic chance of going in the top two." He is also an elite Wing passer.

Players like LaBron, George, and Bryant are Wings who can pass, shot, and change the game with their athleticism. This is what the NBA has become. Jackson falls into that category. And he is more of a LaBron type Wing (not as talented obviously;). A big Wing who can also rebound and cover Bigs down low, and is not just a parameter defender. When you have an ultra-versatile Wing can can score, shoot, pass, rebound, and be an elite defender? You have a guy who is made for the new NBA.
He got a lot better at Kansas, and seemed to have perfected his 3-Point shot in the final 7 weeks of the season (where he shot 48% from Three). "He's the best overall recruit that we ever signed and I've ever been around when you combine athletic ability, talent, IQ, thoughts, maturity," Self said. "I've never been around anybody that had that many things going on like a 25-year-old man should have. He was just way above his years." His one question to me was could he work hard enough to perfect his offensive game.
He clearly answered that question in the final weeks of the season, and he is still getting better. "I think Josh will fit in with any team," Self said. "He's a guy that does the things that allow a team to be great. Everybody needs somebody that not only can score and rebound and produce, but also make the game easier for the other guys on the court." The story of Draft Night could be who wins the battle for the 2nd Pick in the split Lakers Organization, the Ball Camp or the Jackson Camp.

-------

Ball is the type of guy who can pull a team together with his magic on the court (pun intended;). "They have a lot of good players," Ball said. "I just think they need a leader at point guard. I feel I can bring that to the team." The Lakers are overloaded with PGs. Though I don't think that Russell is a PG. But Clarkston certainly is.

They started winning at the end of the season with Brandon Ingram at the Point. "I think a lot of it is just natural," Ball said about leadership. "I think you're either born a leader or you're not." Russell is not! But Brandon might be. It is not a shock that he took on some of that role. He played some point at Duke as well.
But Ball is a guy who can dominate a game without taking a shot. "My dad loved [Magic], loved the way the Lakers played, so I kind of patterned my game after that," Ball said. "Magic Johnson is one of the greatest players to ever play. I love the way coach Walton coaches. Rob's a great dude too. Just meeting all of them is a blessing." It is hard for me to imagine Magic passing on a generational passer, who sees the floor the way he does (or did;).
He is clearly the second best prospect in this Draft, and a better passer than Fultz. "It was a blessing," Ball said. "He's the best point guard to ever play. Me, being a point guard, I looked up to him my whole life. And to finally get a chance to meet him is a blessing." Amazingly this is the third year in a row that they have earned the 2nd pick in the Draft.
Of course the annoying thing to me is that we have to talk about his Dad when discussing Lonzo. Lakers head coach Luke Walton said, "[I have] a very outspoken father myself." But doesn't see it as as a problem for him or Lonzo. "We’re in the NBA, to me, that’s not an issue. Parents are always gonna have their opinions. They’re gonna be outspoken at times. As you know, I have a very outspoken father myself. It doesn’t bother me. If we were to draft him, we’re gonna coach him. He’s gonna be part of our team. He’s gonna be part of our family. And we’ll go from there. This is the NBA. We’ll keep the team where it needs to be. We’ll not let outside things like that influence us on whether or not we pick the kid." But I think the story over his dad being a nut job goes further than the truth.
Lonzo does seem to have a good head on his shoulder. "They said they want me to come in, if I get picked, come in and be a leader and play with a lot of pace," Ball said. "So the stuff they were saying was very positive, and it kind of fits my game. They need a leader. They need a point guard. I feel like I can play that role." I have no doubt that eventually he will.

The Player:
 Josh Jackson: Explosion.

The Reason: There is trouble in paradise. It seems the Lakers are not sure who they want. And you can't blame them. But if they think that DeAngelo Russell is a Point Guard, and we know Magic wants Brandon Ingram to play some point guard? Do they draft another PG and put Clarkston even further down the bench? So it is not surprising that they are stepping away from Ball. And every time a look up Jackson rises up further and further, and may be past Ball already.

Jackson is the elite athlete in this Draft. "The way the game is changing so much today," Jackson said. "Versatility is pretty important. I think I bring a lot to the table. Especially being able to switch on pretty much any position except the Five." If they are having a log jam at the One, Jackson can unclog the jam in a lot of positions.

He is an ultra versatile Wing, who can cover PFs when they want to go small ball. "The point guards in this draft are really, really, really good and are special," Jackson said. "But I don’t think you can really look past anybody in this draft. Point guard or forward, it doesn’t matter. I think this is a really good draft class." He can rebound like a PF and start the fast break like a PG.
The Lakers need some toughness and grit, Jackson has all the grit you need. "But according to several NBA officials who were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter because no decision has been made yet," LA Times reported, "the Lakers are split over whether to use their No. 2 pick in the NBA draft on Ball or Jackson." I'll take a 50/50 shot at the Celtics getting Ball at Three.
Jackson came in for a visit, and a lot of the execs are on his side. "It was definitely just more of come in and try to impress them and hopefully I impressed them enough," Jackson said. "But they can’t look past any guy in this draft because we’re all really, really talented and I think we all bring a lot to the table." I think this can only help the Celtics.
Both Ingram and Jackson are wings with elite passing abilities. "I don’t think playing with Brandon would cause any problems," Jackson said. "I think it would be really special, honestly."
The Lakers, the officials said, have been having a healthy debate on which course to take because they are intrigued by the talents of both players." Pairing up those to young guys opens up a visible path to the Finals when they mature.
Ball showed up to his work out with the Lakers out of shape, and not ready to work. "Also was told that Josh Jackson's workout in LA 'did not go well at all.' Brought high energy but struggled with his shooting and handle." Jackson in an all-out all-the-time guy, who is never out of shape, or out run by anyone.

His primary characteristic is his fierce and relentless competitiveness that drives everything he does. He takes pride in shutting down opponents best player. He improved his Three percentage by ten point in the final 7 weeks of the season. He brings that relentless work ethic and love of the game that young players need to survive the marathon NBA season. He has made Magic turns his eyes away from a point guard who sees the floor like he did.

-------

You know Magic loves Ball's passing abilities more than most. "I am aware of some of the comments of Lonzo’s dad, and I think he’s someone who’s passionate about his son," Jeanie Buss said. "I admire that. In my long history there was a time when I was heavily involved in tennis promotion, so I dealt with a lot of the tennis players’ parents. Their commitment to their kids rivals LaVar Ball’s connection to his own children." If they don't mind his Dad's shenanigans than this is an easy pick.
Jerry West seems to have given them his endorsement. "I don’t even like to talk about his dad. I’d rather talk about the kid," West said. "His dad, to me, I wouldn’t want a father like that, to be honest with you. Because I think he puts added pressure on his kid. You know he loves his kid. You know that. But it should be about his kids, not about him." But his father didn't bother him and his coach at UCLA.
So I have trouble believing that he will be trouble for the Lakers. "I don't look at any parent, when it comes to a professional league, that would be a problem," Magic said. "We’ve always had parents who loved their sons or daughters, who play in professional golf or basketball, or whatever, who get involved, who get excited, and also who think that their child is the best." Still, you have to wonder if Lonzo has some of LaVar's crazy.

If Magic doesn't think his Dad will be a distraction than that is good enough for me. "Now, some will say it publicly, some will only think it, but I have no problem with LaVar," Magic said. "[He deserves] a lot of credit for being in not just Lonzo’s life, but the other two sons, as well. It also seems like it hasn’t bothered Lonzo." Lonzo is a little too quiet for a PG.
I just don't think either the Celts or Lakers can get away from the two point guards. "Nothing in a workout or what I hear from a workout is really going to change [anything]," Goodman said. "From what I was told, Fultz didn’t shoot the ball exceptionally well in his workout in Boston, but they know he can shoot the ball. It’s one workout, it’s a one-on-zero deal. I was there after that workout, and then I came out to LA for Lonzo Ball’s workout here, and then I sat with LaVar and Lonzo yesterday for a while in Chino Hills. So I still think it’s going to be Fultz at One, Lonzo Ball at two, I think Magic is enamored by Lonzo Ball. And then I think Three is a little bit of a tricky choice for Bryan Colangelo and the Sixers. Do they go with Josh Jackson? Do they go with Jayson Tatum? It’ll be one of those two, I have a feeling." I have a feeling as well.

Second Choice: Josh Jackson SF

Josh Jackson

3. Celtics- Lonzo Ball- UCLA, PG, 6-6, 190, WS 6-7, 41.2% 3-P! 73.2% 2-P!

7.6 APG, 14.5 PPG, 6 RPG, 1.8 SPG, .8 BPG,

The Team: This is not a fantasy. "And I saw Ball play the same, and Tatum, and Jackson," Ainge said. "Yeah, I saw them all." Jackson is the late riser in this Draft, and the Lakers are only 50-50 on Ball vs. Jackson, with Jackson still rising. So if you don't love Futz, Three is the place to be.
It has been spilled that Ainge likes Jackson. "We're going to get a player that we like," Ainge said. "In addition to some further assets." He traded down, because he knew either Jackson or Ball would be on the Board.
I would love-love-love to see Ball and Isaiah playing together on a fastbreak Pick and Roll team. "We think there's a really good chance the player that we'll take at three was the same player we would have taken at one," Ainge said. "This was a great opportunity to acquire an impactful asset." Ball is the best pure PG in this Draft. He is the best pure passer in this Draft. He is the most underrated shooter in this Draft.
I liked Ball more than Fultz before the Lottery Balls bounced the Celtics way. "Sometimes when you get an offer you want, you don't want to wait for that offer to go away," Ainge said. "These trades are always based on what players those players turn out to be. We'll all be judged on days like this, and I'm not afraid of that." Fultz has a history of injury that worried me.
Trading back to three was a good move, and would have been a great move if they got a little more compensation. "We think the Sixers obviously wanted this No. 1 pick," Ainge said. "I have all respect in the world for what business they've done over the last few years. I have a good relationship with Bryan Colangelo and Jerry Colangelo. They're doing a fantastic job there in Philadelphia." Let the rivalry begin again. Please.

I remember when Celtic-Sixers games were mark it down TV. "This is somebody that they really wanted and stepped up to get," Ainge said. "They have a lot of future assets. We're going to get a player that we like and in addition to some further assets." But, under the conditions of the trade they could miss out on the Lakers pick next year, and the Kings pick in 2019!
And end up with the Sixers pick in 2019, if the the 2018 Laker pick is #1, and the 2019 Kings pick is #1 overall as well. "Even before the lottery, we have been evaluating these kids for the last few years, and we felt that they were all close," Ainge said about the top four players in this Draft. "The player we would take at 3 was close to the player at 1. We’ll still be able to get the player we want in the draft." They wanted Jackson, and would love it if Ball fell to them here.

Of course all that is moot, because the Celtics are working out a deal with the Bulls for Butler. Bulls said they want a top five pick for Butler. That is why Trader Danny is working out a deal with the Kings for Five and Ten. So if they trade for Five with the Kings? Five if for the Bulls for Jimmy Butler. The Celtics would end up with Butler and Dennis Smith or Ntilikina at Ten.

------

You win with stars in the NBA. This is not football. The Celtics just traded a bona fide NBA star for a bag of magic beans in 2018, or maybe just possibly in 2019. They went through all these ridiculous trades to get themselves in position to pick up a franchise changer. Then boom! He was gone. Jayson Tatum is not a franchise changer. He is not a star. He is certainly not Paul Pierce, please.

The Celtics needed a star. They need to be loaded up with Superstars in three or four years to take a run at the Warriors. That started with Brown, and should have continued with Fultz. This puts them back a few stepped in the process.

Jackson is an interesting prospect, but where is he going to play? He played power forward at Kansas. He is a good defensive rebounder, and an elite athlete and defender. He is as fierce and scrappy as it gets. He discourages very good players with his defense. He is defined by his competitiveness. But is he a star? He is certainly not a star on the offensive end.

This trade has to keep coming back to stars. You win with stars in the NBA. You win with Curry, Durant and Green. Those three guys are the stars that nearly led to a sweep over the Cavs. The Celtics started winning with their Superstar Isaiah, and Bradley becoming a star. Those two guys led them to the Eastern Conference Finals. Then when Isaiah went down, Brown and Smart stepped up a little to show hope that they might someday be stars.

You just don't trade away a star for a bag of magic beans! "If Boston can turn that into more than one player and still get a guy it wants," an Exec said. "I think they’d love to do that." That is always the best. When you can trade down and still get the guy you think is a star.

Okay, take a breath. Calm. Easy. This pick is reminiscent of the last time the Celtics had the top pick in the NBA Draft. So long ago that it has been misreported that the Celtics have never had a number one pick. They traded the Number One pick in the Draft to Golden State (who they are now current trying to catch up with;) for a unmotivated Center named Robert Parrish, and the 3rd pick in the Draft.

That pick turned into Kevin McHale. "I told Kevin that today," Ainge said. "We've got a spot for him. I know we could figure something out for him in some capacity. But I think he's just in a wait and see mode." But are there any McHale's out there in Pick Three Land.

Plus, there is also a chance that the #3 turns into Lorenzo Ball. If the Celtics get Ball out of this deal it is an absolute steal. Ball is a more efficient scorer (thought Fultz is a better scorer), a better passer and defender, shot the same percentage from Three as Futz, and affect wins without shooting better than Fultz. His problem is that we don't know if he has his Dad's crazy, and if after his rookie contract is up he will pull a Paul George and only want to sign with an LA team.

I have to trouble with Fultz and Ball as 1 and 1A in this Draft. If I'm the Lakers I take that 1A option and laugh all the way to the bank. If I'm the Celtics I worry about his dad forcing him back to LA in a few years. If LA passes on Ball, and Danny thinks the Celtics winning will keep him in Boston for at least that second contract, he is a steal. And we all know how things tend to work out for Trader Danny.

The Player: Lonzo Ball: Positively Kidd Like.
The Reason
The Celtics have made a bold Red move again. "We are certainly aware of our competition," Ainge said. "We know how good Cleveland and we know how good Golden State is. We watched the same Finals that everybody did. But I think we're still moving on the same path. And when the right deals come around, we will move on them." This is about trying to win it all, and not just keeping chipping away.
They have enough chips to get a couple of veterans like Jimmy Butler and Blake. "This is certainly a trade that is under the microscope more than others," Ainge said. "But we're not afraid of that." They now still have two more lottery picks if they trade this pick away for Butler.
I don't think it makes sense to acquire Butler and Gordon (but if we end up with Blake and either? We could beat the Cavs in the East). "I think they're both terrific players," Ainge said about Jackson and Tatum. "I'll say that. I like both of those kids. I think they're both terrific talents." I would be very disappointed if after all these shenanigans by Captain Underpants the pick turned into Tatum
Yuck. "We're getting the player we want," Ainge said. "They're getting the player they want. And we're getting an additional player that we want in next year's draft or the year after. It's a good deal for both teams." There is nothing better in a Draft than trading down for a valuable pick (in this case a 90% chance at another Lottery pick), and still get the player you deemed can help your team win a Championship the most.
But if that player is Tatum, I do not agree. "I don’t know that, other than Golden State, there is a team you’d rather be running than Boston," an exec said. "Look at the young guys they have and all the potential they have to find ways to get better, by the draft, by signing someone, by a trade. I don’t think anyone likes taking Danny’s calls because he has been on a roll, and you feel like he is going to fleece you." We just hope he didn't outsmart himself here.
But if rumors are true (and they rarely are in the age of Twits;) this pick is for the dah Bulls. "But they are just in great position to jump on anything that pops up," the exec continued. "They can sit back and let their picks develop. Or they can go for it now, if the right deal comes up. And you have to commend them for that." That is why Captain Underpants made the unprecedented trade of the 1st overall pick a week early, because his plan is to make another big trade or two to maybe get Jimmy Butler (maybe;) to battle LaBron in the Eastern Conference Finals next year.

-------

The pick only makes sense if the Celtics never exercise this pick. I would rather trade down for 5 and 10 than exercise this pick (I'm not pouting;). I would rather they trade for one year wonder Paul George. I would rather pick up Isaac at Five and Ntilikina at Ten than exercise this pick. But this is not what we are looking for. I don't either is going to be a Superstar. Though both have a chance to be stars.

The point of the trade is that they now have three possible top five Lottery Picks again. They have the Nets pick next year, which has a shot at top three. They have the Lakers pick next year, if it is 2 through 5, which could be two top five picks in a Draft that is said to have four stars in it; Or they could end up with the Kings pick in 2019 (instead of the Lakers pick, according to the conditions of the trade), which is a good bet to be top five as well.

Of course the theme of this story is also that they don't want Jackson either. It is well know that Divac wants Jackson and is will to trade up to get him. Ainge has been interviewing guys in the 5 to 10 range. There are clear indications that Ainge wants to trade this pick, and maybe trade down to five, or trade for a veteran. That would guarantee them four Lottery picks over the next two or three years.

So trader Danny made his big move, and the only question left is was it to pick, or trade for a veteran? Getting one of the big names out there would put them in the Cavs class. Getting two of the big names out there could put them in the Warriors class. It smells like Trader Danny is putting away picks to win now.

This of course would be true genius, if Trader Danny traded back, and picked up a veteran All-Star, and still ended up with two Lottery picks in the next two Drafts. Could they make a move for George, for the 5th pick, and still have Ten. The Pacers can't be expecting much for the One year wonder who wants to go home to LA next year. Trader Danny clearly has more to offer than the Cavs.

"The Indiana Pacers are looking to move star forward Paul George prior to Thursday's NBA draft, and have been immersed in trade talks with the Cleveland Cavaliers, league sources told Amico Hoops late Sunday," Sam Amico wrote. "One source familiar with the talks said a deal could potentially involve multiple players from both sides. According to sources, the Pacers are looking to get a substantial player and picks for George."
It would be a big risk for the one year wonder. "There is also the matter of the Boston Celtics, who seem prepared to offer some of their many 1st-round draft picks in a quest for George," Sam Amico continued. "The Celtics own the No. 1 overall pick this year (now #3, and maybe #5 tomorrow;). Although a reported swap with the Philadelphia 76ers is expected to move the Celtics' selection to third. The Celtics also own multiple 1st-round picks in the 2018 and 2019 drafts." But if they get to the Finals it would be a lot harder for George to leave the Celtics for LA.

Then there are the beautiful rumors of Anthony Davis. Are they real? Ian Thompson seems to think so:

I can't believe we're talking about Anthony Davis as a possible thing [to the Celtics]. But that's how much stock the Celtics have built up. And, that's the kind of predicament they're in, in New Orleans... If you're trying to get Anthony Davis. [Trader] Danny's never said he's going after Anthony Davis, but we all know he is. Just like if LaBron gets the ball near the rim you know he going to dunk it. You know Danny's trying to get Anthony Davis now.

I can't believe were realistically talking about Anthony Davis coming to Boston. "You wanna talk about Anthony Davis," Thompson said. "They have not been winning with him. They're having a hard time developing their team. They're in this no man's land. And they are seeing this whole trend of players leaving small market teams to go elsewhere. They saw Kevin Durant [leave]. Paul George is leaving. When Anthony Davis comes up, he owns a house in Los Angeles. And if they aren't able to build a winner around him [he's gone]. Well now they have a chance to get all these #1 picks, guys they'll have under contract really for seven years, and they can rebuild around DeMarcus Cousins (LOL). Whose from Mobile Alabama. They can start to rebuild that way." I'll take Davis over Fultz any day.

Remember the NBA Draft and the NFL Draft are different, and almost opposite things. "They are an NFL Franchise. They are owned by the New Orleans Saints," Thompson said. "They have an NFL Mentality. You can see it in the way they built their team. They do not understand this NBA Idea of developing for the long term. That's why they've made all these short term moves that have not worked out. They may be looking down the road, and seeing that players like Anthony Davis leave when the team doesn't win." They have to start looking more long term.

Davis is gone when his contract is up. That is the biggest factor to me. If they trade this pick, and the magical Lottery pick in a year or two, for Anthony Davis than I am the number one fan of this deal. Davis would be the perfect Celtic. He doesn't give a crap about anything except winning. He could turn into the new Kevin McHale, from the Golden State pick.
