Here is Part One of my

1.0 2017 Boston Celtics

1st Round Mock Draft.

SV=Standing Vert, MV=Max Vert + SR-Standing Reach = MVR Max Vert Reach.

The idea that the Celtics should trade down and pick up more picks is stupid. This is not the NFL Draft. More NFL 7th Round picks make teams in the NFL each year than 2nd Round picks make teams in the NBA. You get more stars in later rounds in the NFL. Mostly you get stars in the first few picks in the NBA, with one, maybe two, guys pop up later every year.

In the NBA Draft, you want to draft stars. "It was hard because itís very tempting," Ainge said about offers for Fultz and the 2018 Nets pick. "A lot of people want the picks. But we just didnít think we were getting the value for the pick." You don't want to draft role players, unless you already have your stars.

The Celtics don't need more role players, they already have two overseas guys who they will struggle to bring over this season already. "We are definitely not in punt mode," Ainge said. "But trading away picks and promising young players for a veteran who might be 5 percent better is not in our plans, either." Screw Ball and Johnson, the Celtics have a shot at a Franchise changer.

The Celtics need a Superstar Athlete or three, who can run with the Superstars on the Cavs and Warriors. "I like having targets in Cleveland and Golden State," Ainge said. "I like trying to meet their standards. It might not happen in a year. It might not happen in five years. With them, it might never happen. Thatís how special they are." Like the Celtics traded for Ray Allen, and then KG to add to Pierce. Then they had the trio of Superstars who could run with anyone.

The Celts cannot realistically contend until the Salary Cap tares Golden State apart. "Something can happen that nobody foresees. I don't look at it as doom and gloom right now," Ainge said. "You know where your competition is. The formula to become an elite team hasnít changed. What youíre asking is if Golden State has changed things so that you have no chance." Celtics fans have to remember that Golden State just dismantled the team that dismantled the Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals.

We are not in the Cavs' league, and certainly not in the Warriors'. The Celtics have 15 to 17 NBA players moving around the world, Maine, and Boston. They want to get Yabusele and Zizic on the Roster next season to see if they can play in the NBA. They might not even be able to do that.

Yabusele is playing in (get this;) Dongfang. "Guerschon has really scored the ball well, shot the ball well. Heís always had good defensive tools. So itís good that heís being pushed. To stretch his game. Itís been fun to watch," Ainge said. "We drafted him on these great physical tools and instincts and lots of great things that he has naturally. This year in Shanghai, heís getting a chance to shine and they need him to score." The Chinese League is suppose to be a good one as well.
Meanwhile Zizic is getting an NBA education in KK Croatia, by being coached by Ex-NBA head Coach Platt. "Heís not going to play near as much on this team," Ainge said. "First of all, coming over halfway through the season. But second of all, itís a very veteran team trying to challenge for a Euroleague title. Itís just not realistic for him to play that many minutes. He was the focal point of his team in Croatia, faced double teams and all that. Now heíll be more of a role player on a bigger team. Itíll be an adjustment for him but a great learning process. The team heís going to, the starting center is Celtics old friend Semih Erden." He is learning at a higher level of basketball behind the scenes.

Being coached by an Ex-NBA HC is a dream come true for the Celtics organization. "It means a lot," Ainge said. "Weíre really excited for Ante and this opportunity. A great coach that believes in him. But also, itís hard for a 19-year-old kid to play on a team full of veterans in Euroleague, which is the highest league in Europe. Most of the time, we assume heís not going to earn minutes on that type of club. But we have more hope knowing that his coach really believes in him, and sought him out halfway through the year to reach another level. So all those things are very positive." I think it would be better for the Celtics and Zizic if they could keep him on KK Croatia for another year.

Not only is Zizic getting a lesson in top level basketball, he is getting lessons in English and NBA Basketball. "The great thing for Ante besides great Xs and O's, [is] he can teach. [Ante] will be coached by an American in English terminology," Ainge said. "That would be really helpful. I know thatís a small thing but I think that would be helpful." Euros have to adjust to the American culture, as well as the NBA game when they come over.

They have a full roster, and are going to lose some good assets already. They might be able to sneak Yabusele or Zizic on the roster, but I don't see how they fit both without a multi-player deal. Where the Celtics get one great player back in return. Trading down to Three to get a lesser skilled Jaylen Brown, in Josh Johnson, and a bag of magic beans is a waste of a bag of magic beans. There are no such things as a bag of magic beans, just like their is no room at the Inn for the 5th and 10th pick in this Draft on the Celtics roster.

The Celtics are so over assetted that it is now at an untenable situation. "Our problem is getting enough minutes for all the guys," Ainge said. "We have good players on our bench that have earned the right to play. And bringing in some guy who is out there after being released by a few teams, or making a trade, that isnít significant. We tried to make a few trades but nothing worked out. I like our team." The last thing they need are more picks and assets.

In the NFL there are 22 starters, not including special teams. You need role players and specialists all over the field. In the NBA you have five starters. You need role players, but when you have a top pick you need one player. The best player. The best player who steps out of a role, and becomes a star. The last thing the Celtics need are three more role players.

The Celts need a Superstar in this Draft, and not two or three good NBA starters. They already have eight or nine good NBA starters, and hopefully a young Superstar in training. The Celts need another youngster who can run with Cleveland, win some one on ones, and develop into a top five player. Too few Celtics were able to do that against the Cavs. Brown was the only one who really looked able to match up with the Cavs, and even LaBron sometimes, athletically.

Maybe the whole plan changes again if the Celtics sign Blake Griffin and Hayward "Markelle Fultz is working out for the Lakers tomorrow," Gottlieb said. "So that means he hasnít been guaranteed by the Celtics theyíre going to take him first overall. So is this a 'Hey, they're wheeling and dealing?' Is it 'Letís go get Blake, and letís go get Gordon Hayward?' Or 'Letís trade the 1 for more pieces?' It feels like they could make a huge series of moves combining free agency and the draft to go for it now." But signing Gordon and Griffin does not mean they are trading Fultz.

In fact, it is the exact opposite. Signing a free agent or two gives them more assets and less room to finagle. Signing either of those two guys does not affect the 1st overall pick in any way (I'll take Gordon by the way;). Having Brown and Fultz on a team with Griffin or Gordon could help the two youngsters. Then the Celtics would have two guys growing as Griffin, and maybe Gordon, are fading.
But in the end the truth is that they may sign Gordon or Griffin, and take a shot at getting into the Finals. But no one is beating Golden State for a while. Plus, the choices are not mutually exclusive. That is what makes this such a special situation. They can sign a big free agent, and draft Fultz. They can go for it this year, and still keep the future potential unlimited with the two young prizes. There is no need to rush. Especially with GS looking like one of the all time great teams.

Markelle Fultz

1. Celtics- Markelle Fultz- Washington, 19 years old, 6-4, 185, 6-9 WS, 8-6 SR.

41.3% 3-P! 23.2 PPG, 6.7 APG, 5.7 APG, 50.2% 2-P, 1.6 Steals, 1.2 Blocks.

The Team: The Celtics are in an odd limbo that we have never seen before. They are fighting for supremacy in the East, which would normally be the primary objective of the Organization. But they also have the supremely advantageous Nets Picks. Which mean they are on path to use those picks to win it all in five to eight years (or maybe less;).

This is a tightrope they are walking on. But a funny thing happen this year on the way to the Finals. "I think sitting here right now with the No. 1 pick in the draft, the answer is obviously yes and sitting in the Eastern Conference finals, the answer is obviously yes," Ainge said. "I think that being patient, sometimes you need to be patient. Itís hard for me to be patient. I like action, but we have a good group of guys around us. My whole staff, ownership, we sit and calmly try to figure out what the best path is to take. We donít want to make any mistakes and so far weíve been pretty good." It becomes glaringly obvious to anyone watching that the Warriors and Cavs are two or three heads above the rest of the NBA.

There is a need for patience on all levels now, and not the instant gratification that people seem so desperate to have now a days. "We have our own expectations that we live up to, not based on what everyone else thinks," Ainge said. "We expect to reach our full potential, to win Playoff games. Our motto the whole season was to win playoff games." They won their Playoff games.

Getting to the Eastern Conference was a great achievement for a team that hadn't won a Playoff series. "I know thatís not easy and challenging. Iíve seen 8-seeds upset 1-seeds," Ainge said. "When we won in 2008 we barely got out of the first round. Winning playoff series is usually based on matchups. Iím glad our team is living up to what the expectations are internally." They got a serious lesson in what it takes to be a Champion.
So now is not the time to blow up their long term potential for some stupid pyramid scheme. "Iíve been in this business a long time, Iíve seen deadline deals, contract buyouts, things that sound great on paper," Ainge said. "Even with our run in the Kevin Garnett-Paul Pierce-Ray Allen era, we did that and it really only worked out to our benefit one time, in my opinion. We have good team, good depth." Now is the time to use that experience and Cap space to get better now, and gleefully take Fultz, who reminds me of Derrick Rose. He is not quite as explosive off the floor as Rose, but he is a better shooter already.
The Reason: It is tough not to say that Fultz in not going to be a star in the NBA. As an 18-year old kid, he dominated the PAC-12 like no one else had in years. I think it is extra important to remember that he just turned 19 a few weeks ago. He played all last season as an 18-year old kid. And, he kicked some serious ass against guys who were four and five years older than he was.

That is a very difficult thing to do. At his age he will only be getting better for years to come. "I mean, getting the No. 1 pick is very fun, itís very exciting," Ainge said. "Weíve never had that before. So that clarity as to where everybody is in the draft. When youíre in the trade deadline and youíre talking about trading picks, itís 1-4 or possibly 5 if Brooklyn starts winning games and so forth. Thereís so much uncertainty when youíre making the trades. I think for both teams. And now thereís certainty and clarity." They have a Fultz in hand, and letting a guy with his youth and talent fly away is much more difficult than then most seem to think.

They will already have an upgrade in Brown from last season. "Iíve felt [a title] was a long shot for this team, but Iíd never put a ceiling on what their potential is," Ainge said. "These guys are really together as a team. When our team is healthy and playing well, and I donít think Isaiah Thomas is 100 percent, I feel like we can accomplish a lot more than what they are on paper." And maybe another scorer to go with Isaiah.

I was shocked by the Griffin pronouncement. "The Celtics have made no secret and will tell you over and over again when big names come up, theyíll tell you all year that if thereís a big name out there, theyíll do their due diligence," Himmelsbach said. "It wouldnít surprise me at all for them to at least have contact with Griffin. But realistically, the guy who fits their system, who knows Stevens a little bit? Hayward would be a good situation. Add him with Fultz to the core you have back [there in Boston]? They wouldnít win a title. But itís the continued growth and development." There is no real proof of his interest. It is all writers being quoted.
So whether it's trolling, speculation, or inside scoop, is very unclear. "Blake Griffin, and I think the Clippers may think this too, and certainly some other teams [do, that] Boston is really the danger for Blake Griffin," Wojnarowski said. "I think Bostonís two primary free-agent targets right now are Gordon Hayward and Blake Griffin. Now, theyíre not going to get both of them. But theyíre both players who would potentially have interest there, and who Boston, I think, looks at in different ways with their future." The Gordon Hayward connection makes sense to me.
Griffin averaged 21.6 PPG and 8.1 RPG. But he only played 61 games last season, and has had trouble staying healthy his while career. "Thereís no doubt the Celtics could use some help in the post and could use some rebounding," Himmelsbach said. "If you essentially swap out Amir Johnson for Blake Griffin? That is a pretty sizable upgrade to your starting lineup." It just sounds like speculation to me, but that doesn't mean that Griffin hasn't heard it and become interested.

Either Gordon or Griffin would be a great addition to this team as well. "Isaiah can play with anybody," Ainge said. "He can play 2-guard. He can play whatever. Heís just a basketball player. Heís a scorer, and heís a great off-the-ball player as well." If Thomas didn't get injured they would have won a game or two more.
Thomas really hurt them in the first two games against the Cavs, because he was so obviously injured, and bravely playing when he shouldn't have been. "I think that weíve had a lot of good fortune," Ainge said. "And we have a terrific coach. Heís been a big part of that process. And we have a lot of good players. I think Avery Bradleyís been here the longest. I think Avery Bradley was the MVP of the Chicago series, helped us come back from an 0-2 deficit. Isaiah has been amazing player for us. Being able to get Al Horford to come in and play and watching the development of Jaylen and Terry and Jae Crowder and Kelly. Itís been fun watching those guys develop." Adding another scorer in Gordon or Griffin would give them a nice top three set of scorers in: Isaiah, Gordon or Griffin, and Bradley who should average over 60 PPG.
Though I admit I have trouble believing that Griffin is going to come to the Celtics. "But I give a lot of credit to Brad," Ainge said. "The organization is a great organization. Our owners are fantastic, they give us all the support, security, to really broker a steady organization.
Again, thereís just a lot of good fortune. Thereís a lot of luck involved." It would be wonderfully interesting if they got one or two more bits of luck, and picked up Griffin (and;) or Gordon.

I do think the lure of playing in the East, where the Playoff competition is a much easier road to the Finals than in the West, has to count for something for these guys as well. Gordon is not going to the Western Conference Finals with Utah until monkeys fly out of my butt. Griffin is unlikely to even make the Playoffs with the Clippers if Chris Paul goes to the Warriors (or Spurs or whoever;).

The PlayerMarkelle Fultz: Baby Faced Assassin

PS, the Celtics are not going to take Josh Jackson, ever! They already have a 6-8 Small Forward called Jaylen Brown, who they think can be a star. Oh yeah! And a 6-8 Small Forward called Jae Crowder, who has one of the most advantageous contracts in the NBA. Oh Yeah, and are most likely to be signing a SF called Commissioner Gordon (who I believe is 6-8 as well;). Kill the trolls.

Lonzo Ball

2. LA- Lonzo Ball- UCLA, PG, 6-6, 190, WS 6-7, 41.2% 3-P! 73.2% 2-P!

7.6 APG, 14.5 PPG, 6 RPG, 1.8 SPG, .8 BPG,

The Team: Ball is the type of guy who can pull a team together with his magic on the court (pun intended;). "They have a lot of good players," Ball said. "I just think they need a leader at point guard. I feel I can bring that to the team." The Lakers are overloaded with PGs. Though I don't think that Russell is a PG. But Clarkston certainly is.

They started winning at the end of the season with Brandon Ingram at the Point. "I think a lot of it is just natural," Ball said about leadership. "I think you're either born a leader or you're not." Russell is not! But Brandon might be. It is not a shock that he took on some of that role. He played some point at Duke as well.
But Ball is a guy who can dominate a game without taking a shot. "My dad loved [Magic], loved the way the Lakers played, so I kind of patterned my game after that," Ball said. "Magic Johnson is one of the greatest players to ever play. I love the way coach Walton coaches. Rob's a great dude too. Just meeting all of them is a blessing." It is hard for me to imagine Magic passing on a generational passer, who sees the floor the way he does (or did;).
He is clearly the second best prospect in this Draft, and a better passer than Fultz. "It was a blessing," Ball said. "He's the best point guard to ever play. Me, being a point guard, I looked up to him my whole life. And to finally get a chance to meet him is a blessing." Amazingly this is the third year in a row that they have earned the 2nd pick in the Draft.
Of course the annoying thing to me is that we have to talk about his Dad when discussing Lonzo. Lakers head coach Luke Walton said, "[I have] a very outspoken father myself." But doesn't see it as as a problem for him or Lonzo. "Weíre in the NBA, to me, thatís not an issue. Parents are always gonna have their opinions. Theyíre gonna be outspoken at times. As you know, I have a very outspoken father myself. It doesnít bother me. If we were to draft him, weíre gonna coach him. Heís gonna be part of our team. Heís gonna be part of our family. And weíll go from there. This is the NBA. Weíll keep the team where it needs to be. Weíll not let outside things like that influence us on whether or not we pick the kid." But I think the story over his dad being a nut job goes further than the truth.
Lonzo does seem to have a good head on his shoulder. "They said they want me to come in, if I get picked, come in and be a leader and play with a lot of pace," Ball said. "So the stuff they were saying was very positive, and it kind of fits my game. They need a leader. They need a point guard. I feel like I can play that role." I have no doubt that eventually he will.
The Player: Ball is the purest PG to come out since Kidd. "Does he possess the talent, and the mindset, and the basketball skill we're looking for?" Magic said. "Of course. We just have to get him in for an interview first before we can make those types of decisions." He consistently makes the positive passes that put teammates in better position than before the pass.

That is a great skill to have, and rarer than you'd think. "This young man has been a champion in high school," Magic said. "And then heís gone on to have a stellar career at UCLA. And his father was talking at that time, but it didnít bother him. So as long as it doesnít bother him, itís not going to bother the Laker organization as long as Lonzo performs on the basketball court, right?" Which is something he has done his whole life.

The Reason: You know Magic loves Ball's passing abilities more than most. "I am aware of some of the comments of Lonzoís dad, and I think heís someone whoís passionate about his son," Jeanie Buss said. "I admire that. In my long history there was a time when I was heavily involved in tennis promotion, so I dealt with a lot of the tennis playersí parents. Their commitment to their kids rivals LaVar Ballís connection to his own children." If they don't mind his Dad's shenanigans than this is an easy pick.
Jerry West seems to have given them his endorsement. "I donít even like to talk about his dad. Iíd rather talk about the kid," West said. "His dad, to me, I wouldnít want a father like that, to be honest with you. Because I think he puts added pressure on his kid. You know he loves his kid. You know that. But it should be about his kids, not about him." But his father didn't bother him and his coach at UCLA.
So I have trouble believing that he will be trouble for the Lakers. "I don't look at any parent, when it comes to a professional league, that would be a problem," Magic said. "Weíve always had parents who loved their sons or daughters, who play in professional golf or basketball, or whatever, who get involved, who get excited, and also who think that their child is the best." Still, you have to wonder if Lonzo has some of LaVar's crazy.

If Magic doesn't think his Dad will be a distraction than that is good enough for me. "Now, some will say it publicly, some will only think it, but I have no problem with LaVar," Magic said. "[He deserves] a lot of credit for being in not just Lonzoís life, but the other two sons, as well. It also seems like it hasnít bothered Lonzo." Lonzo is a little too quiet for a PG.
I just don't think either the Celts or Lakers can get away from the two point guards. "Nothing in a workout or what I hear from a workout is really going to change [anything]," Goodman said. "From what I was told, Fultz didnít shoot the ball exceptionally well in his workout in Boston, but they know he can shoot the ball. Itís one workout, itís a one-on-zero deal. I was there after that workout, and then I came out to LA for Lonzo Ballís workout here, and then I sat with LaVar and Lonzo yesterday for a while in Chino Hills. So I still think itís going to be Fultz at One, Lonzo Ball at two, I think Magic is enamored by Lonzo Ball. And then I think Three is a little bit of a tricky choice for Bryan Colangelo and the Sixers. Do they go with Josh Jackson? Do they go with Jayson Tatum? Itíll be one of those two, I have a feeling." I have a feeling as well.

Second Choice: Josh Jackson SF

Josh Jackson

3. 76ers- Josh Jackson- Wing, 6-8, 203, Kansas, FR, WS 6-9 3/4, 8-3 SR,

16.3 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 3 APG, 54.9% 2-P, 37.8 3-P, Steals, 1.7, 1.1 Blocks,

The Team: The Sixers want to move Simmons to PG. "We need Ben at point guard," HC Brett Brown. "Let Joel be Joel and we need shooters around them." If they want Simmons to play the point than they have to succeed with the musical chairs that will follow defensively. Simmons can cover Power Forwards and Small Forward. But I just don't see him covering other positions.

So they have a need for defensive players first and foremost to make that plan work. "I do concede the thing that we missed with him not playing after the all-star break is I have this vision that I want to pursue with him as a point guard," Brown said. "Nobody can promise that I'm right. I don't know, either. But I think from what I have studied from his childhood, high school and at LSU, I feel confident that we should try this and look at it. We would know a lot more if he had played." They need a Wing who can cover SGs and Small Forwards, and maybe PGs and PFs as well.
That is starting to sound more and more like Malik Monk. "It is of that species, that is for sure," Brown said. "It's somebody that can guard the other point guard. It's somebody that can make a Three, and can bring the ball up the floor from time to time. It's a combo guy." They need a pure SG (Monk), who can cover PGs defensively.

And with the Third pick in the Draft they also need him to be a star, or an offensive force. "To Bryan Colangelo's credit, he does fit the qualities we're going to need in that position next to Ben Simmons," Brown said. "If you go Ben Simmons at a 1, that type of player at a 2, Covington at a 3, Saric at a 4 and Embiid at a 5? Can that team play defense? You bet. Can they score? You bet. Can they run? Yes they can." Only Monk is not a PG in any way shape or form. He is a pure shooter who can play a little defense, and little else.

One thing we know for sure is that Johnson can play the wing defender role. It is much easier to find a Shooting Guard in a Point Guard body in the NBA. Then Covington can cover Twos, and Simmons and Johnson can cover the Threes and Fours. Or, Saric can cover the Threes or Fours and Jackson can cover the Twos. But if they honestly want Simmons to play the Point, and I wholeheartedly agree that he can, than they have to think about an ultra-versatile defender first, and that is Jackson.
The Player: Jackson reminds me of Butler. He is a defensive first Wing, with a lot of offensive upside. I say he has a lot of offensive upside, because he is far from being an offensive player teams have to worry about. He has to work obsessively on his 3-Point shot, like Butler did, to become the star people think he is. He is already one of, it not the, fiercest competitors in this Draft. That goes a long way in the NBA.

He has already meet with the Sixers. "It was definitely just more of come in and try to impress them and hopefully I impressed them enough," Jackson said. "But they canít look past any guy in this draft because weíre all really, really talented and I think we all bring a lot to the table." If Brown is thinking about a SG in a PG-body, who can cover PGs and be a deadly shooter, than it will be Monk.

However, Monk is not a PG in any way other than size. He is one of the worst passers in this Draft. He is a boom or bust cluster-scorer, like Vinnie Johnson. "The point guards in this draft are really-really-really good, and are special," Jackson said. "But I donít think you can really look past anybody in this draft. Point guard or forward, it doesnít matter. I think this is a really good draft class." If Brown is thinking versatile defender to pair with Covington to cause havoc around Simmons on defense? Than Jackson is the easy pick.
He probably has the best versatility of any player in this Draft. "The way the game is changing so much today, versatility is pretty important," Jackson said. "I think I bring a lot to the table, especially being able to switch on pretty much any position except the Five." But he seemed more comfortable covering Fours than I like, because I don't see him doing that in the NBA.
Jackson carries the most off field baggage of anyone in the Lottery in this Draft. He admitted to vandalizing a car of a ladies basketball player from Kansas. "It was just something I had to do,Ē Jackson said. "And I learned from the mistake that I made and Iím making it through it." He was ordered to attend anger management classes.

The Reason: Tatum is also an interesting option here. "I think the two guards Fultz and Lonzo Ball are going to be one and two," Embiid said. "I like Josh Jackson a lot and Jayson Tatum. So I expect one of those guys to be at three with us." Tatum is more polished offensively, but Jackson is a better and more versatile defender.

Jackson is also more explosive off the floor. He covered multiple positions in college (which would be his role in Philly), and a much fiercer competitor. "I'm excited," Embiid said. "We jumped up one more spot. I wish we would have gotten the No. 1 pick and the Lakers' pick, but we're trusting the process and it's going to be exciting to see who we're going to draft." Though I do questions his hands sometimes. He doesn't have elite hands, and is not an elite scorer in the clutch.

Second Choice: Malik Monk G

Fascist is as Fascist does. Beware American. President Jerkballs is pulling the cowardly republican Senate closer and closer to the cliff.

First off what Jared was doing is not a "Backdoor". A "Backdoor" is a legal way to have private conversations with other world leaders for the benefit of America. What Jared set up was a Covert/Illegal/treasonous communication with a foreign enemy who was ATTACKING US! And let's be clear again:

LAWYERING UP IN THE FACE OF TREASON, AGAIN!

(Bernanke, the Fed chair during the 2008 episode and a Great Depression scholar, wrote in a blog post earlier this year that eliminating OLA would be a "major mistake"

because these are essential tools

"for ensuring that financial stress does not escalate into a catastrophic crisis.")
