7
Things for Super Bowl: Part I.
By
TOM
1. First Things First-
The Rams offense is not nearly as good as KC’s offense. “Watching the
Rams, this is a really good football team,” BB said. “I'm just
impressed with so many things they do. It's easy to see why they're here.
They're very well-coached. I would say, offensively, they're creative but
they're very fundamentally sound and they execute extremely well; the
least penalties in the league offensively. They don't make many mistakes.
They really do a great job of attacking defenses.” But they are a much
different offense, a much more balanced offense.
They
want to run the ball (which KC didn’t seem give a crap about doing at
all;) and run play action. “I would say they’ve done a fantastic
job,” Pats DL coach Brendan said. “It’s an offense that’s very
balanced, they’re versatile, they’re good at a number of different
things, they present a lot of problems, both with their personnel and with
their scheme.” They also run a ton of misdirection with a Jet-motion
that confuses defenses, and makes the play actions even tougher to defend.
The
Rams can run the ball, like the Pats. KC was a very one-sided offense. So
the Pats are going to have to stop Anderson and Gurley, because Goff is a
little sketchy at QB, even though he is the best play action QB in the NFL.
As usual, the two best run teams are in the Super Bowl.
The
Rams defense is much better than KC’s. “Defensively, a lot of
outstanding players and they've got some good players at every level of
the defense,” BB said. “Wade [Phillips] does a tremendous job with his
scheme and the experience that he has. They turn the ball over very well
with their fumbles and interceptions. They're very in-tune to getting the
ball off of the offense in a number of different ways, and really every
kicking play is an explosive play potentially for the Rams.” They have a
much better defense than KC, and much different Offense.
As
all teams have to geared their defense towards the passing frenzying that
is the NFL, the defenses loose their grit inside to get the speed rushers
going, and put extra DBs on the field. This is going to be a game that is
old school. Rams like to put extra LBs on the field, and keep two ILB on
the field most of the time (sort of the opposite of the Chargers in the
Divisional Game). It will be fought in the trenches, as both teams need to
run to win.
Though
I think the Pats are more prepared to win with a primary passing offense
that can run. "He's got four or five things that I would say are pretty specific to their offense, the Rams offense, that I won't say we've never seen them before but I think the way they do them, they blend well together. They sort of merge into each other and create problems for the
defense," BB said about McVay. "Those are the things that I think are the toughest for the defense. They do a lot of things out of one personnel group and that's an
issue. So you kind of have to deal with everything from everything. Sean's done a really good job of doing what they do but they blend it together in a way that it's different, but it's the same but it's different. It's hard for the defense to really differentiate or get in the right spot easily. You have to really work at it. They don't make it easy for you."
While the Rams are more dependent on the run game to set up the passing
game.
The
best news is that the last couple times the Pats have had an extra week
off, and essentially two weeks of rest, both Gronk and Brady were visibly
better/healthier. This Super Bowl Bye helps the Pats a hell of lot more
than the Rams. If Brady and Gronk are even more healthier this week than
in the AFC Champ game (and with two more weeks of healing, you have think
they will)? Than that is a huge advantage for the Pats.
The
biggest worry is that the KC defense sucks. The Rams defense doesn’t
suck. They are pretty damn good, with two pretty damn good DTs holding the
middle of their defense together. The Pats need to run, and with Suh and
Donaldson in the middle that is going to be a foray into their defensive
strength. And Pats know what Suh can do, but Donaldson is the much better
player. The best news for the Pats is that the Rams D did give up the
highest Average Yards Per Carry in the Regular Season.
That
Pats will exploit that defensive flaw. “I think Sony’s a young guy.
He’s got a good run style that’s really allowed us to be a physical
football team. He’s a very, very willing participant in blitz pickup.
He’s a smart guy. He understands what his assignments are, what his
rules are when we put him in those situations,” McDaniels said, then
continued. “He’s a competitive kid. He practices hard. Football is
important to him. He’s been able to add another element to our room in
terms of his toughness and his play style that we really enjoy.” Watch
for Michel to have a very effective game, and when they over load to stop
the run Brady will play action for a big play.
Donald
is a freak at finding the ball in the backfield. I have never seen a guy
who could burst into the backfield consistently and find the ball when
they do. That is two different set of skills that is usually only held by
HOFers. Suh does not have that level of talent finding the ball in the
backfield, but he was great in the NFC Champ Game. When Donald wins, he
finds the QB or RB in the backfield for a loss.
But
again, the Pats have an advantage in the run game, which slows the rush.
They have been winning with Michel running counters and Zone runs. Where
the O-line blocks one way (and usually the DLs follow), and the RB cuts
back behind them to the other side. It takes great eyes and instincts by
the RB, and great mobility by the OLs. So if they can get Donald and Suh
moving the wrong way, and Michel can break down the defense, and get to
the 2nd level. Then comes the play actions that Brady destroys defenses
with (Goth ain't the only QB who is great at play action passes;).
Meanwhile,
the Rams offense is completely dependent on the Play Action. “You need
the backs to read the blocks properly. You need the line to sell the
play-action to create the opportunities in the play-action game. I'd just
say overall they execute extremely well as a unit on a very, very
consistent basis,” BB said. “They do a lot of things to give the
defense problems: misdirection and complementary plays. So they all kind
of look the same but it could be one of two or three things.” Goff is a
good QB in the non-Play-Action play (sort of;), but he is near perfect on
Play-Action passes.
That
is when he becomes a great QB. “They’re very good at that
(Play-Action),” BB said. “But again, they’re good at everything.
They’re good at running the ball. They’re good at play-actions.
They’re good at screens. They’re good on the deep ball. They’re good
on the catch-and-run plays. They’re good at everything.” If the Pats
defense can stop the play-action pass they win.
Goff
has been the best play action passer over the past few years. His stats
without the play-action pass sucks. They are the most play-action pass
dependent team in the NFL the past few seasons. That is McVay’s offense.
The Pats have to stop the run first, and Anderson has been great in the
Play offs. While Gurley is still a homerun hitter waiting to happen. The
Defense has as near a complete opposite job this week as they had in the
AFC Champ Game.
