It Changed Everything and Everyone!

By TOM

Just be insulting to all us old farts who remember what is was like before the 2001 season, here is one young man's opinion of the 2001 team. "It's an honor," Julian said. "Like I've said, I've watched him play since I was in 8th grade and I've been here for eight years. So that tells you something. To get to see him do this, it couldn't [have] happened to a better guy or a better player. Everything he's done, he's deserved. He should be the face of this league with: his story, how he prepares, he's a family man, and it couldn't [have] happened to anyone better." Edelman was in the 8th grade in 2001!?! Dagnabbit! I am not that old!

You have to remember back in 2001 the Patriots had never won a Super Bowl. They were more Clown City than contenders. The Pats Franchise was way more this years Cleveland Browns than Paul Brown/Jim Brown's Cleveland Browns. The change may have started with Parcells and Bledsoe, but it was BB, Brady, and the 2001 Patriots that changed everything in New England.

"That was a tremendous team. We struggled in the early part of the season, 5-5 at midseason," BB said. "[We] won nine straight after Thanksgiving. A lot of those wins weren't pretty. They were just good situational football. Good toughness. Just being able to make the right play at the right time. We played pretty well on defense. We were good in the kicking game. We had a great kicker. Antowain Smith gave us a lot of good yards, a lot of tough yards. Tom didn't turn the ball over. Troy gave us some explosive plays in the kicking game and enough plays on offense to win. You put it all together, that team, they found a way. They played the best. I don't know if they were the best talent-wise, but they played the best and that's why they're champions.

"They'll always be right at the top for me in terms of individuals that I admire because of what they did. I mean, the deck was stacked against us week, after week, after week; Oakland to Pittsburgh to St. Louis especially. But that team competed for 60 minutes. They were relentless: believed in themselves, believed in each other, believed in what we were doing. It was great to honor them. Great to see them all back here. Not all of them, but a lot of them: 43, 44 guys, whatever it was. There are a few of us still kicking around here and a few guys in some other spots. Adam [Vinatieri] and Romeo and Mike [Vrabel] and Larry Izzo and so forth, but it's great to see those guys back. That was a tremendous group."

That team was not a wealth of talent. BB had signed 28 free agents that offseason, and most made the team. The only real star they had on the team was Drew Bledsoe.

Bledsoe was literally almost killed in the 2nd game of the season by Mo Lewis and Shaun Ellis. For some reason they always leave Ellis out of the story of the hit. But I always thought that is was Ellis hitting him low from behind that cause the contortion by Mo Lewis hitting him high from the front that broke the blood vessel in his chest.

"I always show that hit. There’s an old saying when we learn about the phrenic nerve, which is a nerve that aerates your diaphragm and allows you to breathe, in med school. It’s called ‘C3, 4, 5 and keeps the diaphragm alive.’ And the reason you remember that is C3 is the nerve that goes to the top of the shoulder. And so a lot of times if you have blood or fluid in your chest, it irritates your diaphragm, it irritates the nerve, so the presenting symptom of a serious chest condition can be shoulder pain. So it’s kind of my way of saying, just because an athlete or a patient comes to you with shoulder pain, think ‘What else could this be that I could be missing?’ before jumping to the obvious diagnosis."

They thought it was concussion at first, and then his shoulder hurt. The bleeding blood vessel in his chest was hurting his shoulder and head, and anywhere except were the deadly injury actually was. And all the while his lungs were filing up with blood.

"Drew could have died," says Gill- http://www.si.com/nfl/2016/09/22/drew-bledsoe-hit-tom-brady-mo-lewis-jets-. "He ended up having about three liters of blood in his chest. He had torn one of the blood vessels behind his rib that was then pumping blood into his chest. They got a CAT scan of his belly, and you can see the bottom of the lung fields and they could see that was filled with fluid. So then they extended the study up the chest and saw what the problem was. They were able to drain the blood out and immediately once that happened, he started feeling better, his breathing was under control, his blood pressure stabilized. But it was really dicey. I don't even think Drew knows how serious it was. But he really could have died."

Lucky, they finally thought it was a ruptured spleen, and brought him to the life saving hospital. He broke a blood vessel in his chest, and was bleeding internally. They took him to the one hospital in the area that had the one piece of medial equipment that could save his life.

"I started examining him and it was pretty clear to me that his shoulder was not the main issue. I actually thought he may have had an abdominal injury or ruptured his spleen and I called our internist over, Jim Dineen, to look at him as well. I said, ‘I think something’s going on with his abdomen. Could be his chest, but I think it’s probably a ruptured spleen.’ Our internist looked at him and said, ‘Yeah, I agree. There’s something going on here.’ Then we took his vital signs and his pulse was high, and he was breathing kind of rapidly. We got the ambulance in, we told his brother to step out for a second. We put him into the ambulance for Mass General."

And the one guy who was trained to use the equipment was on duty. If they took him to another hospital than HGH than he would have died. If the one guy who just happened to be trained on the new machine that can draw blood out of his lungs was not on duty he would have died.

-------

Ironically they went from almost the worst moment in Patriots history to it’s greatest in a few great months. The only tragedy that exceeded this one was Daryl Stingley, and Bledsoe was three or four miraculous acts luck away from being the worst. I think everything changed in the Patriots Organization in that moment when he didn't die. But everything certainly changed in that moment during the 2001 season. Brady got his first start against the Colts the next week, and the Pats won their first game of the season.

"Every team is its own team, so there will never be another team like that one. There will never be another team like this one. It will be unique, but there's certainly a good message there," BB said. "I talked to the team a little bit about what that team did and how special they were. When I think back to that team, what they did was hard. It was really hard. With the way the season started and just what we had to go through. I'd say the way that team was coached, relative to the way some other teams had been coached. We had a lot of work to do. We had lot of I'd say foundation to build, a lot of structure to implement.  But they didn't blink. They responded to it. They met every challenge.

"They didn't always come out on the winning end but we battled. We took some tough, tough losses. Miami in particular. After we beat Indianapolis, I kind of thought we were getting back on track a little bit at 2-1 or 1-2. We quickly went to 1-3 down there so that was a hammering. But like I said, that team battled through. They battled through a tough loss to the Rams on Sunday Night and then won the rest of them. Not necessarily with a lot of style points but with enough game points at the end to be champions. It was pretty special.

"But yeah, I'm sure our guys respect what they do, love to hear it. They've heard about a lot of those guys, not so much from the '01 team, [but] the '01 team that also won '03 and '04 teams. So Bruschi and McGinest, guys like that, Troy Brown. But there were some guys that were on the '01 team that didn't play on the '02 or '03 or '04 teams. I said it kind of makes them part of that special group."

And it really did change everything in Boston sports. It was just a bit of a coincidence that the other three Pro teams went on Championship runs at the same time. But the 2001 Patriots team really did start the golden age of Boston sports. The Pats had never won a Super Bowl before that team. The Red Sox had won a World Series since 1918. The Bruins had won a Stanley Cup since Bobby Orr. And the Celtics hadn't won a Championship since the original Big Three.

"That was a great night for a couple of hours just to be able to see those guys again," BB said. "A lot of them looked good. A lot of them looked like they could still play a couple of downs anyway. It was a lot of fun. It was great to see them. It was just a great opportunity to enjoy each other and reflect back on a great year. I would say not only what they did for the Patriots and the program and this organization but it was kind of a springboard for Boston sports over that decade. Not that we had anything to do with the Red Sox or the Celtics or the Bruins or anything else, but it was just the first one of many with those three great organizations. You kind of feel proud that we were the first one and that they all followed."

That team was tough as nails. The thing that I remember the most about that team is that they beat the crap out of other teams. Once they got it all together, they started knocking four or five players from the other team out of the game. They were so physical that they injured other teams players like nothing I ever saw before or since. It started before the Rams game, and they injured four or five of the Ram's players out of that game as well. They were the most physically tough and dominate team I ever saw play.

"Every year is kind of like this," BB said. "I think at that point we were 5-5. We were just trying to get to 6-5. When we were 6-5 we were just trying to get to 7-5. We just try to have one good day, try to have two good days, try to have a good week, try to play good, and start all over again. That team kept just believing in itself. We kept playing.

"Again, every game was a tough game other than the Carolina game at the end. The Miami game, that was really for the division and as it turns out a first-round bye. Each of those games, the Miami game and then Oakland, to Pittsburgh, to St. Louis. I mean, we were just trying to find a way to win. We didn't really think of ourselves as anything special. I don't think that really happened until really kind of it was all over. We were just trying to find a way to compete and find a way to win.

"I still think it's pretty interesting how the NFL schedule gave us a bye the last week of the season, like, 'You guys will be out of it so you can go ahead and start your vacation early. Go ahead on home.' I think that certainly surprised them, surprised the schedule makers. Of course we ended up having to play because of the 9/11 game that got postponed with Carolina in Week 2. When the schedule came out and we saw that our bye was the last week of the season. I'm sure we didn't follow along to the script that they had written for us, but that's alright."

Not only did New England change, but all of America changed in September of that season. I still remember sitting on the edge of the bed, just a few feet from the TV, watching the towers burn. I couldn't move. I couldn't think. I couldn't fathom what had just happened. And no one really knew what was going on.

"I just think it's cool for us as players," McCourty said. "Those guys being around, walking around the locker room, just for us to get a chance to talk to them, say, ‘What's up,' share a story or two, there's no real connection as far as being out there playing today or this season, but I think anytime you can be around guys like that that are champions, that understood how to win, really at a time, Bill talked about that season, when it wasn't all winning, winning, winning. It was tough times, and just getting to talk to those guys it was cool and a little awkward because it shows you how old Tom is to see him out there on that field playing and winning games. It was a great opportunity I know for me just to see some of those guys and talk to them. I've gotten a chance to know some of them over the years, so it's always good seeing the championship team."

I was listening to Howard Stern as I was getting ready to go to class, and the said a plane just smashed into one of the World Tower building, and no one knew what had happened. I turned my TV on and watched the second plane hit the second Tower. No one knew it was an attack until the second plane hit. It was pure confusion, grief, and loss of innocence. Then came the shame of the Iraq War, which turned our Executive Office into a For-Profit Presidency. Halliburton, literally, pilfered a quarter of the almost 2-TRILLION dollars spent on the illegal Iraq war.

We learned a lot of hard lesson from that Season. Going from such a catastrophic tragedy, to near death on the field, to a Super Bowl victory. Then we watching the War-Profiteering Oval Office tear our Country apart, while jerk-balls like Gerry Callahan called those of us against the war "cowards" (Well Gerry, 2-trillion taxpayers dollars later, how do you like me now? I still don't understand how citizens allowed the Republicans to turn the Iraq war and ISIS into Obama's War. it was a better con job than Bush and Cheney's "Weapons of Mass Destruction con job, after Jones proved conclusively that Saddam had no Nukes.). Anybody apposed to the war was singled out by (R)s as basically enemies of the State. So just remember the story of Iraq when Donald the Defrauder starts the propaganda to invade Iran.

Because when you have a for-profit President (and Vice President) trying to settle a grudges or greed without Oversight, millions can die, and trillions of taxpayer's dollars will be lost. I hope those incomprehensibly painful lessons are not far too soon forgotten by this January. Which ironically January 28th will be the 16-year anniversary of the Patriots first Super Bowl victory.

War starts with War-Profiteers propaganda. Propaganda by definition is a lie. The one thing we know about Trump is that he lies more than Cheney, Bush, and Rumsfeld put together.

Here is how they did it (There are so many lies and acts of Terror in this that it is predictive of Trump). I DARE YOUR TO READ THIS (R)s:

This is an astonishing report (I left over half out for some brevity sake) on how much Bush and Cheney new the truth, and blatantly lied to commit Iraq on us. It was a clear dereliction of Duties by the press, (D)s, and the Citizenry. But most importantly it was a clear act of evil committed by Cheney and Bush, and one that Trump knows well. To be a true Citizen, and not a subject of Trump, you must read this in it's entirety.

Bush collars Rumsfeld physically and asks: "What have you got in terms of plans for Iraq? What is the status of the war plan? I want you to get on it. I want you to keep it secret."—Bob Woodward. [Date the public knew: 4/18/04]

Cheney on Meet the Press: "Well, the evidence is pretty conclusive that the Iraqis have indeed harbored terrorists [lies are the building blocks of evil]." Also claims 9/11 hijacker Mohammed Atta met with Iraqi spy in Prague, a claim he'll repeat long after CIA and Czechs disavow.

The FBI, which favors standard law enforcement interrogation practices, loses debate with CIA Director George Tenet, and Libi is transferred to CIA custody. Libi is then rendered to Egypt. "They duct-taped his mouth, cinched him up and sent him to Cairo," an FBI agent told reporters. "At the airport the CIA case officer goes up to him and says, 'You're going to Cairo, you know. Before you get there, I am going to find your mother and I'm going to fuck her.'" [Date the public knew: 6/13/04] Under torture, Libi invents tale of Al Qaeda operatives receiving chemical weapons training from Iraq. "This is the problem with using the waterboard. They get so desperate that they begin telling you what they think you want to hear," a CIA source later tells ABC. 2/20/03 Rumsfeld: "There is no question but that [the invasion] would be welcomed." Later says: "Never said that. Never did…You may remember it well, but you're thinking of somebody else." [lies are the building blocks of evil]

2/25/03 Gen. Eric Shinseki tells Congress "several hundred thousand troops" will be needed to occupy Iraq. Rumsfeld retaliates, naming Shinseki's successor 14 months before the end of his term.

2/27/03 Wolfowitz tells congressional hearing: "I am reasonably certain that they will greet us as liberators…the notion of hundreds of thousands of American troops is way off the mark."

At A congressional hearing examining the march to war in Iraq, Republican congressman Walter Jones posed "a very simple question" about the administration's manipulation of intelligence: "How could the professionals see what was happening and nobody speak out?" Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson, Colin Powell's former chief of staff, responded with an equally simple answer: "The vice president."

But the blame for Iraq does not end with Cheney, Bush, or Rumsfeld. Nor is it limited to the intelligence operatives who sat silent as the administration cherry-picked its case for war, or with those, like Colin Powell or Hans Blix, who, in the name of loyalty or statesmanship, did not give full throat to their misgivings. It is also shared by far too many in the Fourth Estate, most notably the New York Times' Judith Miller. But let us not forget that it lies, inescapably, with we the American people, who, in our fear and rage over the catastrophic events of September 11, 2001, allowed ourselves to be suckered into the most audacious bait and switch of all time.

The first drafts of history are, by their nature, fragmentary. They arrive tragically late, and too often out of order. Back in 2006, we attempted to strip the history of the runup to the war to its bones, to reconstruct a skeleton that we thought might be key in resolving the open questions of the Bush era. As we prepare to leave Iraq, we present that timeline to you again. MotherJones.com offers a greatly expanded (if now technologically outdated) version of this timeline, one that is completely sourced to primary documents and initial news accounts. It was our hope to make this second draft of history as definitive as possible. So that we won't be fooled again.—THE EDITORS

3/18/03 Washington Post article headlined "Bush Clings to Dubious Allegations About Iraq" notes, "As the Bush administration prepares to attack Iraq this week, it is doing so on the basis of a number of allegations against Iraqi President Saddam Hussein that have been challenged—and in some cases disproved—by the United Nations, European governments and even U.S. intelligence reports." Story is buried on Page A13.

3/20/03 War begins. So who thinks Callahan read all the way to here? Raise your hand.

This is what happens when you elect lying sacks of shit, like Donald T. Defrauder. It is important for all the citizens who read that menagerie of evil, put together by the impressive Mother Jones, that you not let the new For-Profit Presidency get away with all the lying, deceiving, and evil that led to the Iraq war, as the propaganda has already started against Iran. Please-please-please, all true citizens remember what happens when you allow the Oval Office to lie, cheat, and steal on that level, because it has already started.
