Defensive Struggle.

By TOM

KC came out 1st and 10 to start the 2nd Half Empty. Pitt matched up in a 2-4 Nickel. They like to stay bigger in their Defense than the Offensive formations. Pitt sent four. And Tuitt tackled Smith as he threw. That is a very aggressive defensive scheme against an Empty formation, and something that Brady is going to have to pay attention to.

2nd and 10, KC in a 3-Wide Weak shotgun. Pats will be lining up in this formation on Sunday. Pitt got aggressive again. They lined up in a 2-4 Nickel and brought three LBs and a Safety up to the line. They send four, but Dupree and the Safety on the Strong side don't drop. They just kind of stood at the LOS and watched the RB. Smith gave the ball to the RB, and Pitt was all over it.

3rd and 11, KC lined up in a 3-Wide Winged shotgun, which is another formation the Pats will be lined up in. Pitt matched with a 3-4, with all seven guys up on the line, and a safety up in the slot. That is excessively aggressive scheme against this formation. They sent six, and Dupree stopped to cover the RB. Smith went deep down the Seam to Kelsey. He couldn't hang on. They are forced to punt.

The 3rd quarter is tricky. All teams go in at the Half and try to change some tendencies. So you often see them running out of formations they pass on in the 1st Half, and visa versa. Or in this case, they spent most of the 3rd lining up in formations they didn't lined up in the 1st Half.

1st and 10, Pitt in a 3-Wide Weak shotgun, with a Stack on the right. They did not use this formation in the 1st Half, but it feels like a run. They ran Bell up the Gut. He burst up field, and then cut outside for a huge gain. He crossed midfield dragging a defender, and ran down to the 36.

1st and 10, Pitt in a 3-Wide Strong shotgun with Twins Right. They ran twice out of the 3-Wide Weak shotgun in the 1st Half. They ran Bell off tackle. 2nd and 4, 3-Wide Strong Shotgun Stack-Right. This is the third straight formation they did not line up in, in the 1st Half. But they have been running out of the Strong shotgun. Yup, they ran again. This time a sweep to the left. Bell got outside, but can't turn the corner.

1st and 10, Pitt in 3-Wide Weak Shotgun Twins-right. This is a formation that they like to alternate on. I think they ran last time. So they should pass here. They do, sort of. Ben threw a miscommunication pass into the dirt.

2nd and 10, 4-Wide Strong shotgun, with a Stack-Left. Another formation they didn't line up in, in the 1st Half. They ran a Draw. Bell barely made it back to the LOS. 3rd and 9, Pitt motioned into in a 3-Wide Weak Shotgun, Twins-R, Pass 2 for 3. Ben faked a screen to the right, and then turned to the left where Bell was and threw the Screen to that side. But KC was all over it to force the FG. Pitt-15. KC-7.

1st and 10, KC in a 3-Wide Singleback. Pitt matched up in a 2-5, as a Safety walked up to the line. They ran play action, and then faked the reverse, but Dupree was all over Smith. Smith was barely able to dump it off to the RB. He was knocked back instantly.

2nd and 13, 3-Wide Singleback. Pitt matched up in a 2-4 Nickel with four guys on the LOS. They sent four. Dupree is up field next to Smith in a flash. Smith stepped up and overthrew the WR. But they called pass interference.

1st and 10, KC lined up in a 3-Wide Strong shotgun. Pitt matched up in a 2-4 Nickel with four guys on the line. They ran a Draw. Dupree hit the RB at the line. Ware dragged him for a few yards.

2nd and 7, Twin-Twin Singleback. The Pats will definitely be lining up in this formation. Pitt matched up in a 3-4. Smith Dropped, and then took off for a few.

3rd and 3, KC lined up in their Wacky Diamond Shotgun. Pitt matched up in a 2-5, with six guys up and around the line. They hiked the ball directly to the RB. He ran an Option, and kept it for a First. We definitely won't be running that wackiness.

1st and 10, Empty. Pitt matched up in a 3-3 Nickel with 5-guys on the line. They sent three, and the two LBs up on the line dropped. Smith threw a bad pass. 2nd and 10, KC lined up Empty. Pitt matched up in a 2-4 Nickel with four guys on the line. They ran a jet sweep.

3rd and 2, 3-Wide Weak shotgun. Pitt lined up in a 3-4 with five guys on the line. A penalty was called. 3rd and 7, Empty. Pitt matched up in a 2-4 Nickel with four guys on the line. They send four, and Harrison sacked Smith to force the punt.

1st and 10, Pitt got the ball at their own Two. They lined up in the I, and they are definitely running with their backs up against the Endzone. KC knew it as well, and slammed him back. He actually lost a little. 2nd and 11, Pitt in the I. Bell was able to skip past the FB for about Nine. 3rd and 1, Bunch-Right Singleback, and this has to be a run as well. Bell didn't make it. He got stuffed to force the punt.

1st and 10, KC lined up in a 3-Wide Winged shotgun. Pitt matched up in a 3-4. Pitt sent five, as both RBs stayed in to block. Kelsey was wide-open going down the middle of the field. Pitt really struggled to cover the middle of the field. But, Kelsey dropped it inside the Ten. It seemed every time KC was about to score a TD they choked. The Pats aren't going to do that.

2nd and 10, KC in a 3-Wide Strong shotgun. Pitt matched up in a 3-4. Pitt sent Three, and got some pressure on Smith. Smith had to take off outside. 3rd and 5, Empty. Pitt matched up in a 3-4 Nickel with all six guys near the line. They brought the four guys on the Strongside, and dropped the two LBs on the other. KC Called timeout. This was the play were Kelsey cheap shotted the Pitt DB. That really was as dumbass as I have ever seen. That penalty knocked them back over to the wrong side of Midfield.

3rd and 20, KC in a 4-Wide Strong shotgun with stacks on both sides. Pitt matched up in a 3-3 Nickel with five guys on the line. They do the same blitz package as the last time. Smith has time, and hit Maclin for a First.

1st and 10, Twins-L Singleback. Pitt matched up in a 3-3 Nickel. Gay blitzed from the slot, and KC ran right into him. He made the tackle for a loss. 2nd and 11, KC 3-Wide Weak shotgun. Pitt matched up in a meandering 2-4 with a safety up in the box. Smith threw quickly short to Conley.

3rd and 4, 3-Wide Strong shotgun. Pitt matched up in a 2-4 Nickel, with five guys on the line. They send three. Smith threw to a WR who dropped the ball and forced the field goal to essentially end the 3rd quarter. Pitt-15. KC-7.
