Defensive Struggle.

By TOM

The Steelers started the game at the 30. On 1st and 10 they lined up in a 4-wide Weak shotgun. They tried to run a center screen to Bell. However, Poe knocked the ball down.

2nd and 10, Pitt lined up in a 4-wide Strong shotgun. Roethlisberger hit Brown down the seam. 3rd and 3, they lined up in a Bunch-right 4-Wide Strong shotgun. Brown broke outside and down the sideline. Bell stayed in to block. Ben never looked right and threw quick to the left. He hit the little slot guy Eli Rogers for a First.

1st and 10, Pitt lined up in a 4-Wide Strong shotgun, with Trips on the left. Ben ran a little play action to Bell, and then instantly fired the ball at the TE Jesse James in the Box. He caught it moving backwards. Then he tried to leap over the Safety. He didn't make it, but he got the First.

1st and 10, 4-Wide Strong shotgun with a Bunch on the left. Oddly, the OLG had been standing up before the snap and looking back at Ben. Then he looks forward and taps the OC who then hikes it fast. Ben had time to stand in the pocket, and gave his TE time to get deep. He threw it to James right over middle 15-yards down the seam for another First.

1st and 10 at the 30, 4-Wide Weak shotgun with Trips left. They finally ran, and Brown went off tackle to the right. He ran through a tackle, and fell forward for six. 2nd and 4, they lined up in a bunched up Singleback. It looks like a run formation to me. They ran Brown towards the Bunch, but he quickly cutback up the middle. He weaved right through the middle of the line behind his blockers. The ILB finally took him down after he got the First.

1st and 10 at the 13, Pitt lined up in a 3-Wide Strong shotgun. James was standing up at the end of the line squatting like an H-back. So I'm not calling James down, so this is not Trips. When James is standing up I'm calling him a Wide. When he squats down like an H-back I'm call him a TE. Ben handed it off underneath to Bell. The O-line formed a pocket for Bell to run into, as they are wont to do. Bell moved into the pocket, and is three yards past the line of scrimmage with two blockers still in front of him. He sliced between the two blockers for about eight.

2nd and 2 at the Five, same formation. The OLG is still tapping the OC to tell him to hike it, and he hikes it almost right off the tap every time. He ducks his head and snaps it. This looks like an exploitable weakness on the O-line, and the Pats are going to need that because this O-line is one of the best run blocking O-lines in the NFL, if not the best.

The 3-Wide Strong shotgun with Trips-left is a formation that they will run and throw out of, and they throw this time. Ben looked at Brown swinging out of the backfield but didn't throw it. Then he looked in the endzone as he took off to his right. He threw it into the dirt at Bell's feet. I don't know why he didn't throw it to Bell immediately. 3rd and 2 from the Five, Empty. Ben hit the little Slot guy Rogers about a yard off the line of scrimmage. He was pounded back instantly and didn't pick up the First. They kicked the Field goal. Pitt-3. KC-Zip.

1st and 10, KC lined up in a 4-Wide S-shotgun. Pitt matched up in a 3-3 Nickel with four guys on the line. Then they shifted the Weak-ILB to the line and brought Gay up. The LB on the line got pushed back and the RB ran for seven.

2nd and 3, KC lined up in a Veer, with three RBs forming a pyramid behind the QB. Pitt matched up in a 3-4 with a Safety in the box. They ran a sweep to Hill, who was lined up as a FB in the Veer. The defense flowed nicely outside, but Hill was able to cut back for a First and more.

1st and 10, KC Empty. Pitt matched up in a 3-2 Dime with four guys on the line, 2 up 2 down. Both edgerushers ran past the QB faster than I like to see. Smith stepped up and hit the TE right over the middle. The coverage was bad so Kelsey was able to turn up field and ran another ten or so yards.

1st and 10 at the 20, Empty. The Steelers matched up in a 3-4 with four guys on the line. The three LBs dropped right out of the Box in zone drops. Hill ran about five yards upfield and cut in. He was wide open as he caught it, but the three LBs closed fast.

2nd and 3, KC lined up in a 3-Wide Singleback. Pitt matched up in a 3-3 Nickel, with a safety creeping up on the strongside. Pitt sent the four guys on the line. The safety creeped into the box, but stayed in coverage. Smith went outside to Maclin, and he picked up the First.

1st and Goal from the Five, KC in the Veer again with three guys forming a triangle behind Smith. Pitt matched up in a 3-4 with five guys on the line. KC used a misdirection play action. They faked the same run they ran out of from this formation the first time, and the defense all flowed to the strongside. Smith then rolled out to his left, and hit a wide open Alfred Wilson in the endzone. Pitt-3. KC-7.

1st and 10, the Steelers lined up in a 3-Wide Singleback, with stacked WRs on the right. They ran a Smash away from the Stack. KC held the line, and took Bell down for nothing. 2nd and 10, 4-Wide Weak shotgun with a Bunch on the Right. Brown and James headed down the seam right off the snap. Brown broke outside, and the throw by Ben was ten yards short.

3rd and 10, Pitt lined up in a 4-Wide Strong shotgun Trips left. Bell stayed in to block. Ben almost got sacked, but then stepped up and went deep to Brown. KC was covering Brown with a linebacker. The Pats cannot do that. Brown caught the ball 45-yards downfield, and fell forward for 7-more. That was a big play against a terribly designed defense.

1st and 10 at the 23, they lined up in a 4-Wide trips-right strong shotgun. Last time they had trips right they ran, but it feels like a pass. They ran that quick play action to Bell, and then quick-throw to James down the seam. He wasn't ready for it. It looked to me like Ben has the choice of handing it to Bell or throwing it short to James in the box, in an odd kind of Option play.

2nd and 10, 3-Wide Weak Shotgun Twins-Left. They ran and passed with twins left from a Weak-Shotgun. This feels like a pass. Ben dropped and hit the slot receiver Rogers on a short Out.

3rd and 7, 4-Wide Strong shotgun Trips-left. They passed out of this formation last time, and on 3rd and 7 it would be hard to do otherwise. Ben checked the play, and they went into a 3-Wide Weak shotgun Twins-left. Bell stayed in to block again. The KC coverage was a little off as three guys seemed to be covering Bell as he stayed in to block. Ben threw a wild Osweiler-like pass outside to a wide open Brown that was uncatchable to force the FG. Pitt-6. KC-7.

1st and 10, KC Empty. Pitt matched up in a 3-3 Nickel. They like to try and stayed bigger than the offense's formation. They will use their LBs to cover smaller guys. They run a shovel pass to the TE inside, and he ran for the First. KC has really been exploiting the middle of the Pitt defense.

1st and 10, KC in a 3-Wide Strong shotgun. Pitt matched up in a 2-4 Nickel, with a Safety in the right flat. The Safety picked up the RB swinging out of the backfield, and Smith threw it to him. He was taken down hard out of bounds.

2nd and 8, KC in a 3-wide Weak shotgun. Pitt matched up in a 3-4 Nickel, and just before the snap the Safety charged up on the RB side. They ran. The 5-Tech slowed the RB down, and was Held. Gay beat the TE like a drum to get in on the tackle.

2nd and 16, Trips Left Strong-shotgun. Pitt matched up with a 3-3 Nickel with their big LB Dupree up on the line on the RB side. The Safety snuck up behind him as well. They really wanted to take the RB out of the passing game for Smith. Dupree dropped into coverage over the RB, and the Safety dropped deep. Smith, who was looking left to try and trick Shazier, snapped back to the right to throw to the RB, and had to take off. He was forced to throw it away as the RB was doubled. Harrison pushed the TE trying to get off the line right out of his pattern, and then went and hit Smith.

3rd and 16, KC lined up in Trips left Weak shotgun. Steelers matched up in a 2-4 Nickel. They ran a WR screen to Hill. The CB took him down well short to force the punt, to essentially end the 1st Quarter.
