Things for Sunday: Part I.
off I just want to thank all the fans of this site. I have been
promoting my books for sale primarily on this site. As a result, I
have sold almost 500 books in the past year. Thank you for your
support and patronage, both are greatly appreciated. I cannot tell
you how happy it made me when I read that report. So thank you Draft
fans and Patriot fans alike, and mostly thank you to all the fans of
my books and website worldwide.
1. AFC Least- This is the worst group of teams the
Patriots have faced in the AFC East I have ever seen. From the apocalyptic
decision to bench the second best QB in the AFC Least for a rookie, to the
tragic decision to bring in Fantasy QB Jay Cutler to unleash his losing
ways. To the complete inability to build a QB, and an Offense, by their HC
in the swamps of Jersey. Suck-Suck-Suck.
The Bills have the most motivation to beat the Pats in two weeks.
"I'm glad I had my mouthpiece in," Tre' White said. "I
probably could've bit my tongue off. I bit my lip pretty bad. Terrible
headache. It is what it is. He did what he wanted to do. He is what he
did. Dirty shot. So what does that make him? Dirty player. Simple."
But they won't.
The Dolphins should win this game. Everything is in their favor this
week. This is revenge game for the Dolphins. They are at Home, where the
warm weather works against the Pats players. The Pats are Gronk-less, and
the reason they get away with such a shortage at WR is because Gronk is
their Number One WR.
But they won't. "I think they are still battling," Gase
said. "I mean, we have been practicing good? That’s the
frustrating part, more than anything. And it’s not translating to
Sunday. We are still making a few mistakes that are really hurting
us." Small mistakes become big problems when you don't have a QB who
can bail you out.
It makes the rest of the team worse every week. "Well, it was
bad news because we didn’t come through on the other side of the
ball," Gase said. "We turned the ball over when we were down in
the red area. We didn’t score touchdowns. When we get our opportunities,
we’ve got to make it count. And we didn’t do it last time for
sure." Like, totally hurts the entire team.
And maybe they are not all the worst teams ever, but they are the
worst group of QBs ever. Which leads to some of the worst coaching
decisions ever. Which leads to a series of incompetence and job openings.
All because they cannot cultivate a quarterback.
Miami is the exception to that. But because of the tragic injury to
Tannehill, it still makes even the simplest of decision, like special
teams, more and more complicated. "Our defense went three-and-out
last time, and we got caught on a fake punt," Gase said.
"That’s a prime example of everybody has to do their job. We’ve
got to be where we’re supposed to be. It’s complementary football.
It’s what they do best. We have to do a better job of it. If we get a
three-and-out, we can’t allow a fake punt. That’s where we need to be
better." Without an NFL caliber starter at QB, everything gets blown
up and exposed because of the inability to recover from mistakes.
And for all the haters who wonder-wonder-wonder why BB held onto
Jimmy-G at the expense of a top 12 pick in last years Draft? Just re-watch
all these AFC Least games and keep repeating, "I'm an idiot-I'm an
idiot-I'm an idiot" until you think you could coach the Bills.
Meanwhile if you have a great QB, you can grow and change as an
offense, and as a defense. "That’s the challenging part: How much
hasn’t he seen?" Gase said. "You’ve just gotta keep trying
to find ways to move the ball. They do a good job of changing things up
and showing you different looks. Every year it’s different. That’s
what makes that whole organization tough to compete against. They’ve got
good players and at the same time they have really good coaches. They give
you enough changes year to year, and as the season goes on they
evolve." While the loss of Tannehill, and the disaster at the QB
position it has caused, has caused the offense, and thus the team, to
devolve each week.
It has caused even the simplest of decisions, like the opening coin
flip (THE OPENING F-ING COIN FLIP!), to become too complicated for the
Dolphin HC. "Well, if we take the ball, you know what’s going to
happen at the end of the half right?" Gase said. "They’re
going to have six minutes left, they’re going to use all of the clock,
and then they’re going to get the ball [back to start the 2nd Half], and
we’ll be on the sideline. And they’ve got a chance to have two
[halftime infamous] scores without us touching the ball." If he is
worrying about the opening coin toss than BB has already won.
2. Drafting Patriots- It will be hard. It will be more
difficult than anything the Patriots do this season. But I am more
convinced now than at any other December that the Pats will win the Super
Bowl. Now that is with the caveat that Brady can get healthy. He has been
missing a practice every week for the past month or so. He is injured, and
it has been showing on the field. And
you know what winning the Super Bowl means? That's right! The Pats will
pick 32nd in the 2018 NFL Draft. So…
With the 32nd Pick in the 2018 NFL Draft... The Super Bowl Champion
New England Patriots select…
Austin Bryant- OLB/DE, Clemson, 6-5, 265, #7.
Now I don't want to discount the pure speed rusher Derek Rivers, he
is one of BB's favorites. Rivers was awarded one of the five parking spots
designated to the five guys who worked the hardest in the off season. That
has BB written all over it. But the Pats still need some speed in the edge rush.
Bryant has the versatility to play both standing up and with a hand
down. He is great against the run. There are not a lot of edge guys who
play the edge, and set the edge, against the run better than Bryant and
Ferrell. They are both forces against the run. If either is on the Board
it won't take long for BB to step up and take one.
bounces up sideways to set the edge with more burst and agility than
Ferrell. Nice blast off that get him upfield to crash over the RB with
nice power. He also will line up at 5-Tech in odd fronts occasionally (not
as much as Ferrell). He has versatility to put his hand down at 5-Tech,
and then bounces outside while the QB is signaling, and line up outside
standing up, which also allows the ILB to slide up inside to blitz.
He has great quick hands. He is not a 240 speed rusher. He is more
of the 270-pound edge rushers the Pats have stolen the past few years in
Flowers and Wise. He has nice power in his hands when he is chopping and
shoulder slapping his way past the ORT. Great blend of size, speed, and
Bryant will also fake up field and then drop. He can tip the pass in
the slot to the WR on a comeback. He doesn't have great hands, but he can
defend a pass in the zone drop. He will also drop outside into the slot.
He is a little lighter and slighter than Ferrell. Bryant has a nice
straight arm move with his inside hand, to keep the ORT off, and then a
quick dip inside. Loves to try and swing his way past the ORT, by grabbing
his arms and pulling his way past him (I love that move).
With the 77th pick (the Pats use pick 34 (the Jimmy-G pick) to
trade down five times and 43 slots to pick up seven picks in the next five
Drafts) the New England Patriots select…
Mitch Hyatt, OLT Clemson, 6-5, 295, #75. He rebinds me of Matt
Light. Which has been a flaw in thinking of many Pats fans. Light was a
freak at OLT. Guys his size and athleticism are not natural OLTs.
Comparing him to Light is really a negative. He has a chance to be an OLT,
but not a Day One chance. I'd say a 3rd Round chance.
He is effect moving to either side to block in the run game.
Terrific sealing the DE outside with leverage and his arms. Doesn't have
the longest arms, which will hurt him more in the NFL. Very similar sized
(and arm length) to Light. Plays with good intensity, but not the manic
intensity of Light that let him play OLT for 11 seasons.
Moves into the DE low, and
likes to try and shove and push him up. When it works the DE is done. Nice
job sliding outside to pick up the blitzing OLB. He will square up in pass
pro sometimes, and can get beat outside. He doesn't always kickslide
moving backwards. Blocks down with some great power sometimes.
