2nd Quarter.

By TOM

So after both teams go scoreless in the 1st quarter, the Pats lined up on 3rd and 11 Almost Empty, but there was all kinds of movement all over the line. So the Pats had to try again on 3rd and 16. They lined back up Empty. Brady had a ton of time, and finally launched a rocket at Hogan 20-yards down field.

1st and 10, Singleback. They run Dion up the gut, he burst through the middle like his pants were on fire, and scooted over middle field. "Everybody's running hard and doing whatever it takes to win." Dion said. "I mean, you've just got to compete. The best thing you can do is compete. Just trying to prove that you deserve to be out there." Three Falcons finally take him down at the 35.

1st and 10, the Pats lined up in a 3-Wide Singleback. Dion hopped, cut to the right, turned, leaped, and dived forward for about five. "No, I've never seen anything like that before," Dion said. "But it really didn't affect anything." Me neither!

2nd and 6, 3-Wide Singleback. They ran play action. Brady had to take off to the right. He threw a wobbler into the endzone to a Falcon CB. But two passrushers cheap-shotted Brady, and the refs called it one of them. 1st and 10 at the 16, in an I. They ran Gillislee on a Dive. He got smacked down sooner than it was blocked for.

2nd and 5, Pats lined up in a 3-Wide Weak Shotgun. "It was a play we've been working on, and he's so good at it because he's so fast," Brady said. "He can get around that edge. Gronk had a good block, kind of ran him into the end zone with him and Cookie kind of tail piped him, so it was a great play. And, yeah, the fog - that was crazy. I have never seen that. It was just so still out there. The fog had no place to go. I don't think it affected much, really, at the end of the day. I'm sure it looked cool on TV, though." They ran a Jet/Gronk sweep.

Gronk faked a block and got outside. "Just make a little move on the D-end, like I'm going inside, I run around and just go get the outside guy, go block him," Gronk said rather la-de-dah. "What's funny is Cooks is a lot faster than me. He caught right up to me and was like hiding behind me. I heard him at like the 2-yard line and he was like, ‘Go Rob, go!' I had the little block and he made it into the end zone, so it was a great play by him." He blocked out about four defenders with his size and speed.

Cooks slowed and grabbed Gronk by the back of his shirt, and they escort each other into the Endzone for a TD. "I think you see that with running backs and pulling guards and screen passes, things like that [Jet Sweeps], where you have a blocker in front of a runner and the runner is usually faster than the blockers. So, you don't want to get too close to the guy in front in of you because, when there's contact, then you're just running into his back, so you want to leave enough space so that you can cut off the block," BB said. "But, at the same time, you want to be moving at about the same pace as the blockers are moving. But, again, sometimes the runners get a little bit impatient on that and want to push the blocker ahead or let him know that he's right behind him and kind of encourage him to go a little bit faster. But, the runner's got the ball, he wants to make yards, he doesn't want to stand there and get tackled, and the blocker doesn't know exactly where the runner is behind him.

"So, the best thing the blocker can do is just keep going because the tacklers will come to him when they have that kind of relationship. The tacklers will come to the runner, but they'll come to the blocker, too. Really, the key to that is just for everybody to keep running. The tacklers will come. We don't really have to go find them. They'll come to us because of the proximity to the running back." I love when runners reach out, grab, or push the blocker in front of them. Pats-7. Falcons-Zip.

Falcons lined up in a 2-Wide Strong Shotgun. Pats matched up in a 4-2 Nickel. Ryan tried to go deep. "We're just better. We continue to improve each week. From the Panthers game on until now," Harmon said "We just continue to get better each and every week. We continue to come to work, work together, try to find the best combination of players that we can put out there and everybody that goes out there continues to do a great job and just work hard." Harmon leaped over Julio, and knock the ball down.

2nd and 10, the Falcons lined up in a 3-Wide Weak Shotgun. The Pats saw a run coming and matched up in a 4-3, with six guys on the line. But they ran a little bubble screen instead. Gabriel got more than he should have. 3rd and 4, Falcons Empty. The Pats matched up with six guys on the line. They sent five. Ryan had to step up. He fired a rocket at Jones, and the ball bounced off his helmet, as Bademosi grabbed both his arms so he couldn't lift them.

Bademosi has been better than both Rowe and Gilmore in the last two games. "It was a totally different week for him this week in that respect. But, J.B. does a good job," BB said. "He prepares hard every week and he's ready to go whatever his role is, whether it be on special teams or a unit on defense or last week it was a starting role on defense. But, he's very professional. He's smart and he takes his job seriously and really has a good work ethic and goes through all the steps and preparation that he can to prepare himself for the game, whatever that role happens to be. So, he's done a good job of that for us." That was a terrible non-call, but it gleefully forced the punt.

1st and 10, the Pats lined up in a 4-Wide Weak Shotgun. Brady had a nice pocket, but couldn't make the easy throw to Gronk on an out. 2nd and 10, the Pats lined up in a 4-Wide Strong Shotgun. They run a draw to Burkhead. "It's definitely great to be back out there with the guys," Burkhead said. "It's a great team win tonight, in all phases. We came out with really good energy and it felt like we played four quarters, and hopefully we can take this momentum with us going forward." He weaved for 9.

3rd and 1, the Pats lined up in an off set Singleback with eight blockers on the line. They pushed the defenders all over the place. "I thought overall offensively we had a lot of good plays. We even had to put some plays together to drive the ball. This isn't the type of team that gives up a lot of big plays. I think they've given up the fewest in the league, so we were able to do that both in the running game and the passing game," BB said. "I thought our offensive line competed well. Again, they have a good group. There was some back and forth. They gave us some problems and I think we gave them a few, but they competed." Gillislee ran for the First.

1st and 10, the Pats lined up in an I. They ran Burkhead off tackle behind three blockers, and he got nine again. "It's great," Burkhead said. "We've got so many backs that can do multiple things. When you have that versatility, it really helps us out as an offense and as a unit. So we love that. We compete with each other, but we're also the first ones there to root for one another when we make big plays so it was fun tonight to see everyone get their foot in the door." 2nd and 1, Pats lined up in an I. They ran a Dive to Burkhead for the First.

1st and 10, the Pats lined up in a Singleback. Now would be a great time for a play action. They ran the play action, but it is well covered (if I can spot that play action the Falcon's D had better as well;). Brady threw it away over Gronk's head.

2nd and 10, 4-Wide Weak Shotgun. Brady had time, and threw to Amendola out on the boundary. He spun up field for a couple more. 3rd and 3, the Pats lined up, but Gronk jumped off sides. 3rd and 8. The Pats lined up in a 3-Wide Weak Shotgun. Brady had time. He headed outside, and then sets his feet. He lofted a great pass to a double-teamed Gronk on a flag pattern. Great throw and catch. Pats in a Singleback. The ran Burkhead on a dive. He burst through the line untouched. Then was spun down just short.

2nd and 1, the Pat lined up in a Singleback. "For sure. The energy in the crowd tonight was up there," Gronk said. "It's always great when we've got our home crowd just going ham up in the stands. Just overall, we were playing physical as a team. It was a great job, and Rex did a great job. All the running backs did a great job running the ball tonight, which was huge and crucial to have a great running game out there on the field." They ran Burkhead for the First.

1st and 10, Pats lined up in a 4-Wide Weak Shotgun. Brady handed the ball off underneath, but the Falcons are waiting for it. Burkhead didn't get much. 2nd and 10, the Pats lined up Empty. White motioned into the backfield. They ran a screen. But Falcons are all over it. 3rd and 10, the Pats lined up Empty. Brady had to step up as both edgerushers got up field. He fired one at Hogan, but it was well defended. Pats kicked the FG. Pats-10. Falcons-Zip.

Falcons lined up in a Singleback. The Pats matched up in a 4-2 Nickel. "It's now that we just have to finish. It's a group effort, I just feel we need to finish and win the game," Freeman said. "We need to do whatever it takes to win the game. I don't care what it is. We just have to go back to the drawing board, figure out ways to win, that's all that I can say." Freeman ran off tackle, and then cut back for a great first down.

He ran over three defenders, and then cut across the field. "We played good team defense and we all did our jobs," Bademosi said. "We tackled well. We defended the pass well. And we played penalty-free for the most part." McCourty and Bademosi finally brought him down.

1st and 10, the Falcons lined up in a 3-Wide Weak Shotgun. Ice had too much time. He got some pressure and used Brady's footwork to shift to the side to avoid Flowers. "They play zone, they plan man. They do what they do. They did a good job," Sanu said. "We just didn't connect on plays we had opportunities on. They capitalized on opportunities that we didn't. Guys stepped up, made plays and did a really good job and we just didn't capitalize on our opportunities." Ice finally found Sanu for a first.

1st and 10, Falcons lined up in a Singleback. Pats matched up in a 3-4. Freeman got five with some power, as several flags were unfurled. Offset penalties replayed 1st down. 1st and 10 again, Falcons lined up in a 4-Wide Weak Shotgun. The Pats in 3-3 Nickel, and Chung showed them in Man. The Pats sent four, Ryan threw to Coleman. He dropped the low pass thrown into good coverage.

2nd and 10, Empty. The Pats matched up in a 3-2 Dime. "I thought Bill said it best this week. He said it was about time we played complementary football for four quarters," McCourty said. "He said at times, we played really well on offense. At times, we played really well on defense. At times, we played really well on special teams, but we hadn't gotten it all together. I thought tonight we did a good job of that. The longer the offense is on the field, [we're] on the sideline. Defensively we're talking about getting on the field, and getting back off." Adam Butler burst through the line and sacked Ryan for a big loss.

3rd and 20, Falcons in a 4-Wide Strong Shotgun. Pats go Prevent. Ryan can only dump it off to Jones crossing. He bolted over midfield, but Butler and Van Noy stopped him short. "Just competing. Great player; you just got to compete.," Butler said. "Communication. Just playing smarter and better. That's all." The Falcons decide to go for it on 4th and 6.

Even after the 2-minute Warning gave them 5 minutes to think about it. "I was surprised by the fourth-and-6 that they tried," Marsh said. "I'm sure they had a reason for it, but it caught me a little off-guard." It was not a good spot for that call.

4th and 6, Falcons lined up in a 4-Wide Strong Shotgun. "That just showed you how big they thought this game was too. They wanted to win and keep their offense out there because they felt like the offense gave them a good chance to win. It's a testament to what we did," Harmon said. "Even when they got it on the first 4th down, we kept them out of the end zone. We played really good and didn't give up any points. When they got in the red zone, we made it really hard for them to score. That's what we need to continue to do and continue to build on this performance." The Pats matched up in a 4-2 Nickel with Hightower on the line.

Ice over throw Sanu, who was well covered by Butler, to put the Falcons in big trouble. "When you go against good teams, that's what you have to do. We made enough plays. We played really well on 3rd down, which we talked about always helps us when we play well on 3rd down," McCourty said. "And then tonight happened to be where we had to play plays on 4th down, and I thought we handled that well. That's always a little different. You're thinking go punt return. The offense stays, and I thought guys were calm. And [we] were able to execute on 4th down too. So  just overall everyone understanding game plan and play-in, play-out. 11 guys on the same page." The Falcons gave the ball back to the Pats at the 47.

1st and 10, the Pats lined up in a Trips right, 4-Wide Weak shotgun. "Last time we had played this team, it was a little different," Brady said. "But every game takes a little different turn. And I thought we did a great job staying balanced tonight, and we ran the ball really well, really efficiently. Guys ran hard and we really needed it. So, it was great to hand it off and see those guys rush the way they did, the way the lineman were blocking. It was a great way for our team to win." They ran White up the gut behind Andrews and Gronk, for a nice surprise.

2nd and 5, the Pats lined up in a 4-Wide Trips-Left Strong shotgun. "I was saying it's different week-to-week," Brady said. "I think we've got to find different ways to win. I mean, playing great defense, that's always great for us. Running the ball efficiently, throwing it efficiently is really important." Brady dumped it off to White, and he ran for the First.

1st and 10, the Pats lined up in a 4-Wide Weak Shotgun. They ran a draw to White again. He curled outside for about 7. 3rd and 2, the Pat lined up Empty. Brady hit Amendola for a 1st, and he scooted out of bounds at the 29.

Then Brady hit Cooks on a great back shoulder fade to the eleven. That was a great catch. "It was a great game," Gronk said. "It was a great full team performance. The defense played super well and it was just a great overall team win. Big win tonight, for sure." He leaped up, out, and backwards, and snagged the ball behind him after he was in a full sprint. It also put them in position to score a TD with only 35-seconds left on the clock.

1st and 10, the Pats lined up in a 4-Wide Strong Shotgun at the 11. They ran a draw again, as a flag was unfurled. They called a personal foul on Jarrett. 1st and Goal from the 6, Pats went Empty with Brady under center. White motioned into the backfield. Brady gave him the ball. He lowered his head and powered down to the two behind Shaq, Andrews, and Thuney.

2nd and goal from the two, 4-Wide Weak Shotgun. Brady looked right at the trips he had bunched up on that side, and pump faked a little. Then he snapped over to the other side, and saw White sneaking to the goal line. Brady hit White in the endzone for a beautifully executed two minute drive. It just doesn't get any better than that, taking advantage of the other teams folly. Pats-17. Falcons-Zip.
